Learning new pitches

For prospects, how do they learn new pitches? Is is just something that "might" happen automatically or do you have control as a manger/general manager?

We had a discussion earlier this year on this topic. The consensus seems to be that new pitch development is basically random but that good personality traits and coaching may have an effect.
