Modified free agency?
I am currently running reserve era rules in a historical league and, for obvious reasons, player movement is depressed. I am interested in moving away from that, but I also don't want a huge free-for-all in free agency. Looking for something in-between.
As a result, I want to implement "modified free agency" -- limit the pool to 20 or so players (maybe the 1st or 2nd best eligible free agent from the top 20 teams). With this in mind: #1) What would you recommend as the best approach for doing this in OOTP? Setting up free agency rules and then forcibly resigning (in commisioner mode) all but those 20 or so players and then letting the AI play out the rest? #2) Can you think of any unintended negative consequences for this "modified free agency" idea? Thanks in advance... |

You would probably have to do it by WAR as all-encompassing performance stat. Yet clearly it would have big unintended consequences in real life - everyone would bench their guys or play them at first, use them as relievers etc., to keep them instead of having them run away.

Have you tried delaying free agency until players have 8-10 years of service rather than just 6? There must be a happy medium where you're not getting too many free agents, but they're not too decrepitly old either.
