What to do when real life counterparts die (RIP Jose Fernandez)

Sad news this morning. I have Jose on my team. Do I get to keep him? If so would you keep him or give him a career ending injury?

wtf is your problem? A man just died and your only worry is what you're going to do with a fictional version of him on a video game? What an insensitive comment.

It is an alternate reality after the game starts. You wouldn't edit in a regular injury as well I guess.
And I don't think that comment is insensitive - it is a sad loss, but life needs to go on. Why wait an aribtary number of days to pose that question? For some, everytime will be foo soon.
I think however the question could be posed in a more sensitive way - say "that sad loss made be think about what should we do with a IRL deceased player in OOTP?"

I agree it's not insensitive. Asking about how to handle the death in your game universe is a legitimate question. Personally, I'd let him continue to pitch and see how good he could have been.

What a huge loss. I not a Marlins fan but I was a big fan of the way he played the game. RIP.

I would have a very difficult time having any freshly deceased player on my team. So I removed him from my roster. My original question also wondered how OOTP handled such situations, so maybe I didn't have to be insensitive. Also FYI months a go I posted how insensitive it was to have real people die in OOTP. And people disagreed with me then too.

Whenever you pose a question on the same day that someone died, and your only words regarding his life are "sad news this morning" and then you proceed to talk about his position in a video game; it is insensitive, no matter how you cut it. It's almost like if the Marlins would have came out with a press release that said "Sad news, Jose Fernandez died today. Now what do we do about our rotation?"

This is in the OOTP 17 general discussion thread, not Talk Sports. The situation IRL brought up a game related question. Give him a break. He didn't mean it the way you wanted him to.

I am so sorry, but this is a dumb question. Of course you keep him in game. If you're playing a historical game and you have a need for complete accuracy, give him a CE and be done with it.

Am I the only one that thought the only real insensitive part of this thread was calling OOTP a video game

Bobfather, I know you like to think out of the box and provoke with your threads, but there are some things better not said out loud.

Super sad loss. Real life sucks.

Games are where people go to escape real life.

This is what I have done in my game where I just signed the young man 10 years. I changed his entire identity but kept him as a player.

In the past with deceased players I have deleted them.

Insensitive or not, super sad news. Dude was having a phenomenal season. He had the highest ERA+ for ANY starter since WWII with 70 starts, and was already being compared to Pedro.

In the game I am playing currently, which is at the beginning of the 2017 season, I went into commish mode and retired him and immediately inducted him into the HOF.

RIP Jose

You are talking about this thread.

Markus agreed to add death to the game and locked the thread.

Doubtful, since the OP wasn't even an member when that thread was locked and he didn't post in it.

I am so sorry, but the answer is not as cut and dried as you'd like it to be.

Yeah, his death has really gotten to me. Thanks to MLB Network and social media you kinda get to know these guys. I watch Intentional Talk just about every day just to see who they interview. I couldn't even watch the whole thing when I tried to rewatch his interview yesterday. Seems like a really good dude and just a joy to watch. I'm honestly considering not playing my MLB league anymore because of this. I don't even want to see his name in the game, but I also don't want to take him out.

This is such a sad loss for the entire baseball world. I don't know as of yet how I will handle his roster spot. If I do decide to remove him I will write a fitting news article in the 'League News' surrounding this tragic loss.

RIP J. Fernandez

I have to admit, I found the question a little weird to make on the day he died, that said, if he were in my league, I'd let his career play out. Obviously it doesn't mean a whole lot, but it would be cool to see what his career could have been, if not cut short, so young.
