Do I re-sign him?
Hey, if you all post on here asking questions, my turn. Do I bring this guy back?
Obvious choice, right? 4 straight batting championships as a catcher, no ratings decline coming off his best season yet. The problem? He wants some money: League financials are higher than modern day (yay in-game inflation ), the top player's salary is currently 44M. Oh, and that 65M - that's not his initial demand, that was 75M a year for 6 years. The 65M is about the least that he'd accept (rejected 4x60, would accept the 4x65).Sigh. Sadly, I can afford him if I really want him. But can I justify 65M a year, even for a guy who could have 6 straight MVPs if it wasn't for a 1B who's averaged 70HRs over the last 4 years? |

IMO, he's 33 and fragile, no ratings drop yet, but it will be coming soon, and he'll most likely miss time due to his fragility.
So, no, i wouldn't sign him, unless you plan on using him as a DH |

![]() You more or less have to re-sign him don't you? The price is almost irrelevant, though that's not normally something I'd ever say.

I've also got a big catching prospect (top-10 prospect before last season) who can take over.
Needless to say, Miller was a great FA signing when I picked him up. I think he had the easiest decision in the world to decline the player option on his contract. After his first or second big season with me, he also got one of those storyline talent boosts. Could be another reason why he's stayed so strong so far. Do I re-sign him?
All good things come to an end. He has a great run going but a gamble to continue for that money. If you have a good prospect that may be a year out I think would look at other catching free agents available and use that money for a more long term need

Can't bring him back with those demands.
Let him hit free agency and see how the demands look as the offseason goes on. I imagine you'd be able to get him for cheaper late into the offseason. Worst case, someone else overpays him and you get a compensation pick, all while already having a top catching prospect waiting in the wings as the security blanket. |

I wouldn't you could probably buy 2-3 great players with that money, or 4-5 decent/good players. One great player doesn't mean much unless you have a surrounding core(cough Angels cough). So better to have a balanced team IMHO than be putting so many resources into an aging fragile 33 yo C. C aren't known for aging well either and that fact that he's fragile should immediately be a red flag

I would be concerned about the loss of leadership and the fan reaction. If he has any infield skills at all, I would probably sign him and consider moving him to first base to extend his offensive career.

I wouldn't re-sign him, because he's a Bonehead.

Don't buy him. It's worse if you give a veteran that kind of a contract. It's going to be really hard to trade him, too.

would let him go big time. IF and ONLY if you see no other replacement for this player either in minors or FA then attempt to sign him when he a FA and he would usually be MUCH cheaper. Set yourself a harddeck level cost for this player your willing to pay and stick with it. You will see as the FA time goes on and as people not bid for the players services his asking price WILL go down thus saving you boat loads of money.

I would not re-sign him, but, that's because I'm always looking to get younger. By the time he finished that contract, he'd be in his mid 30's and most likely on decline by the time that contract was up, and you'd be paying 65 million a year for someone who's washed up.
Let him walk, get a pick, and groom your prospect catcher. |

Let him hit FA, see if his demands drop enough to become reasonable, then stick with the prospect if that never happens. Paying such a premium for an age 34-37 catcher is insanity, no matter how good he is, and there's no way that his defensive value will hold up over that period.
Caveat - I play without personalities, so I can't speak for the leadership impact to the clubhouse. |

How much of your payroll will his salary occupy? He's still a beast with bat-only, so if your payroll allows can he just DH to help add years to his career?

Let him go - I would rather get rid of a guy a year early than a year late.

It sounds like he's demanding about $35m in today's dollars. For that money you can't buy 11 WAR on the free agent market. He probably isn't worth close to $35m four years from now, but he might be worth $50m next year. I'd give serious thought to keeping him.

You sign him out of Loyalty for whatever the price.
Bam. Let that be the set-back. Compete with that handicap. It increases the challenge and it builds--the story of immersion. The story of that guy that was always a Legend. Nobody will wear his number again. Me, personally, I'd rather take a shot at "the story" than have an easily attained "good team". That's the kind of team that I like to build. Sign him long term and take your shot. Most importantly, you build that character on your team and build around that. For thick or thin.

Oh...I almost forgot.
![]() If you can't resign him it's out on your ass. ![]() I don't mean to add undue stress to your decision.

The STL Cardinals proved its typically best to let big name players walk. Let him go. Play a little money ball and invest your resources elsewhere. Dont want to have an albatross contract in 3 years that is just a hole in your budget.
