Progression and Regression?
So this is regarding all of regression and progression. Does their success during the year effect their progression/regression? Also does anyone else have those guys that have great ratings but play horrible every year?

Stats do not directly change ratings. They can have a small indirect effect in the minors because they will be happier and less likely to pout and mope their way through development... Unless that effect was wiped form the game when I was not looking.
I have had under and over achievers. I had... Raymond "Blazing Saddles" Mungo? (something close to that, might have been "Bean Jokes") who had speed and a good gap rating with decent contact. I hit him 5th behind two excellent hitters and he was a minor deity for 2 seasons, tons of doubles, lots of runs driven in. Then he couldn't hit extra base hit anymore. He over performed at the right time and flew right past the mean to crash and burn in one year. Then I had Richard "Hanging Gardens" Fuller (our MVP was The Babylon Award- "Glass Jaw" Fuller never lived up to the top notch pitching I gave up for him. Taku "Save the Cheerleader" Hiro I think ended up in the HoF, I gave him up for a SodaPopinski knockoff.

Can you share some screenshots on the week to week changes? I've never seen it that often.
What magnitude are these changes.

usually about a full star from some of the players and then the next week they may be up about a half or full star

Stars are a very general overall ranking of players and they are position specific unless you chose otherwise. If you have an OF who can play 1B his 1B ranking may be a full star less than his best OF ranking. You can have a very useful player at 1.5 to 2 stars if he plays a loaded position like real life 3B in today's MLB.

Stars and OVR (I prefer 20-80) can change without your player changing. If enough of the environment around him changes his OVR will change to reflect that.
Also, players can be on the cusp of a change and seemingly bump up but really they were very close for a while but the grading system is too general to show their progression. A 1/2 star change is 10 points on a 1-100 scale, sort of.

it's probably just bad luck. although, i have seen a player with exceptional ratings not play well for multiple seasons... he did just fine after i traded him, lol.
some players get hit with the ugly stick when it comes to results... the opposite of winning the lottery, but it does happen... just like some chump can have some really great year(s). possibly morale affects it more than we think? more specifically the new manager relations. i didn't take note of that player-manager dynamic. As others have said don't pay too much attention to the stars or the 20-80 overall rank.
Just this past season I've had 1B Hanley Ramirez (34/34) and LF Rusney Castillo (38/41) have way better seasons then LF/C Blake Swihart (64/65), who the scouts love apparently. Swihart's scouting report reads as a near elite hitter while Hanley is barely minor league material. It doesn't mean a whole lot. |
