In game manager options

When making decisions during a game, when would you pitch to contact, pitch around, and hold runners?

See attached. The only thing I don't have in there is "pitch to contact." As is my wont, I will update the file once somebody here defines what this is. I think of "pitch to contact" as those times when you are saying "put the ball in play" or "make him hit the ball" but that's somewhat vague.

Pitch to Contact - A pitcher who doesn't try to strike out batters but instead tries to get them to hit the ball weakly, especially on the ground, is said to pitch to contact.

So would it make sense to "pitch to contact" to hitters who's rating is low in contact, or is it more situational? Like trying to get a groundball pitcher to have hitter hit into double play?

Situational. eg - You're leading by 1 run, the opposition has runners on 1st and 2nd, 1 out. I could really use a ground ball DP right now. The next batter isn't a gr8 hitter and hits mostly ground balls, so this is an ideal situation to pitch to contact. If he was mostly a fly ball hitter, then you might just try for a K instead.

And that's just 1 way of dealing with that particular situation, different manager might do it differently. There's many different situation/base states during a game when you might want to use pitch to contact.

I thought pitch to contact was typically used when you have a 6 or 8 run lead in the third. Your hear it all the time that some pitchers are too fine with a big lead and end up blowing it.

I rarely use it.

I've always considered "Pitch to Contact" to be what groundballers do when they're trying to induce double plays.

You don't really WANT to strike the guy out with one out and a man on first, because then you've got to do it all over again with the next guy. You want a nice ground ball to the shortstop or second baseman...

Telling a power pitcher to pitch to contact would probably have... different... results.
