OP Teams losing in Playoffs
Anyone else have this? I managed to win 117 games in a season, my all time high, as the 2022 Brewers, and immediately got swept by the second place 95 win Pirates in the NLDS, while they went on to win the World Series...

Having the best record is literally the kiss of death in this game, and has been for a long time.

117 wins is certainly good but not a slam dunk ticket to the World Series. In my current game my 1988 Mets won 111 games and lost in the first round. Then in 1996 they won 120 and lost in 6 games in the World Series.

Dave is right. I am playing a fictional White Sox team and have had the best record in the entire league for 9 consecutive seasons. 2 WS wins in that stretch.

If we look at the real life teams with the best regular season records each year since 2000, there have been only three WS champions (Bos 2013, NYY 2009, Bos 2007). Only two other times in that period has the team with the best record even made it to the WS (StL 2013, when the Cards had the same regular season record as the Red Sox, and StL 2004, when the Cards again lost to Bos). So, out of those 16 seasons, the team with best regular season record failed to reach the WS 12 times. FWIW, over the 2000-2015 seasons, 13 teams have won 100+ games in the regular season. Of those, only one (NYY 2009) has made it to the WS. This is the impact of expanded playoffs on the once-sacred long season of baseball.

Anything can happen in a 5- or 7-game series, in OOTP and real life.

Exactly what VARoadstter and others said in different ways. regardless of what i write below, it holds true. merely comparative terms used below.
with that said, are these fictional players? i think wiht the new talent distribution of fictional players it's a bit easier to see this type of outcome in the playoffs than in years past. i've seen a 140+ win (156games, even) team lose in the playoffs in a '17 draft pick trading league.. couldn't believe it. maybe the first time with that setting enabled i ever missed winning the WS, lol. |

Just ask my fictional Indians fans... 9 years I've been the GM - 8 playoff appearances, 5 pennants, not one World Series appearance.
