Who would you draft?
Been playing OOTP since 8 or 9. Apparently I forgot my other login account (could have sworn this was it), so while this lists as my first post...it really isn't. Not a big deal, but I guess I am saying this so I am not looked at as a "newb". Nonetheless...
I am a historical career OOTP buff. Usually starting somewhere in the early 1900s and carrying on to modern day...or as long as I can go until I come up with a new idea/twist. Sometimes just commish/overseer, sometimes as a GM, sometimes with 1 franchise, etc. Bottom line I have done a lot of options with this game. I just picked up 17 and for my first (current) career, I decided to start in 1946. Some of the greatest players in MLB history were returning to the game after being off at war. And a year later, baseball would no longer be segregated. So I figured, this is a great place to start. I imported the 1946 season. I deleted all history. I edited all players so no one is over the age of 30. And I did a fantasy draft. I decided this would be the official start of my baseball universe. I decided I would take over as GM of the team who has the worst record in 1946. I would stick with them until I won a world series, and then move on to the worst team in the other league and do the same. Over and over for the length of the career. None of this really matters much other than to add a bit of background. So the 1946 season ends, and the Pittsburgh Pirates finish an abysmal 50-104 (in looking it up the A's actually finished 49-105 that year IRL). So this is my first stop. Looking over the roster...I am not sure if this team participated in the fantasy draft. It is atrocious. They have Enos Slaughter and Dave Ferriss and not a single other player better than 2* (either current or potential ratings). It is truly a bad bad team. Thus....every position is a need. Obviously, finishing 54 games below .500 grants me the first pick in the MLB draft. Since in historical leagues, players are in the draft when the debuted...meaning their ratings are MLB ready...I always hold my draft late November...right around the time that FA season begins. Since 1st rd players will usually become immediate starters...I like to draft before the signings to know if a position has been filled (personal preference). So as you probably all are aware, 1947 was the debut of Jackie Robinson. Who in real life, was an amazing player, an amazing person, and a game changer both on and off the field. Also debuting in 1947 was Duke Snider. A Hall of Fame OFer. I don't do dynasty reports but I do love building history in my historical league to differ some from real life's. And I know...to OOTP, names mean NOTHING AT ALL. It is a numbers based simulation game. But it's hard to ignore the names especially when you are playing with real life players who transformed the game, and world. So...do I draft Jackie Robinson, at age 28...and get the best player currently and have that "history" aspect for my Pittsburgh Pirates. Or do I draft Duke Snider, at age 20...which for a team as bad as mine is, those 8 extra years is huge since we're not winning a pennant anytime in the near future. This post got alot longer than I thought...sorry. But would still love some feedback and thoughts if you haven't gotten bored and hit the X button already |

yeah, i am quite prejudice against age in OotP. i'd go with snider in most cases, too.
i can think of situations where i'd draft the 28 year old. none of them would be for emotional reasons, but there are definitely situations where jackie robinson should be the choice, too. with your situation, i'd go young. if you were in the midst of a dynasty and well-stocked on the farm, i'd take robinson. you should get 4-5 years before he takes a dump and possibly more. |
