OOTP--may have ruined us all :)
I've haven't been the happiest OOTPer since 17 came out. I've been frustrated with the state of the historical game and how long it's taking to get it up and running the way it's supposed to. If this beta patch fixes the fielding, I think that will be a huge step.
Well, Sunday morning I actually purchased one of the other games on the market of the replay variety. Now it's been years and years since I've played this type of game. I had actually given up playing them a few years prior to discovering Season Ticket II for like 9 bucks at Office Depot. I did try Baseball Mogul before I found Season Ticket, but having a player turn into a dolphin didn't exactly float my airplane. So back to Sunday. I purchase this game, download it, download the seasons that were part of the package and start playing. First off the game is pretty darn cool and has a lot of features I think it would be great if OOTP were to copy BUT The first season I decided to play with this game was 1974. I decided to manage the Tigers using real transactions/real lineups. So, I start playing. Now 74 was a cool season for the Tigers for one reason, Al Kaline. It's his final season, the season he reaches 3000 hits and the season he misses out on 400 home runs by 1 stinken home run. Of course, something else pretty damn special happens in 1974 as well and I'm not talking about the DH. Something in Atlanta.....well guess what? Replay games do little to highlight stuff like this. Took me only a few games and I already realized why I love OOTP so much. With OOTP, not only will I be able to watch Aaron chase Ruth, Kaline chase 3000, but I will be able to see if Kaline decides to stick around another year. I missed getting news stories. Never realized how much I love seeing the batter of the month, pitcher of the month and rookie of the month selections, until I finished a month without them. Oh and guess what this game has, something I've been griping about OOTP17 having that 16 didn't? Yup, this game features the spinning cursor. Facegen is such a huge part of OOTP, yet I probably take it for granted, but when it's not there it's missed. Well enough rambling. I like the game I bought, but if anything it only made me realize how great OOTP is and told me to be a little more patient with the historical growing pains that 17 experiencing. So, be forewarned, the grass can sometimes appear greener, but maybe it's just the pea soup you had the night before. OPRAH. |

I never played much Mogul. I played a lot of Strat (before OOTP) and Diamond Mind (because my bro in law liked it). I don't miss them. The change from replay games to any OOTP career mode or online league is a bit like crawling through the wardrobe to Narnia. A whole other world of wonder and awesomeness. And sure the occasional witch, but I can mostly overlook that.

Great post, David.
I have played them all - starting with SSI's Computer Baseball on my Apple II+ in the early 80's, and every game since then - Diamond Mind, Season Ticket, Mogul, PureSim, Radio Baseball (check that out, if you want a basic text baseball sim!), every single one that's been released. Ever. On every platform - console, PC, you name it. And there are things in many of those games that I wish OOTP would do, no question. But you are right - OOTP has nuances and subtleties that I cannot do without, and definitely notice when I go back and play other games. Thanks bunches, Markus! You've created a drug-like dependency on the little things that make OOTP the best game on the market.

Nothing compares to OOTP. I bought MLB The show 14 (whichever last years version was) for my nephews PS4. I like it but it's not OOTP. He went 24-1 346 IP 567 K 45 BB .145 OPP AVG. I cant even cheat and create a stud in OOTP like that. I will use his stats from The Show when I bring him into OOTP to see what he can do in my ABF league.

OOTP didn't ruin me! .... i was ruined before (ever since i saw Maricial vs Spahn pitch in beautiful Candlestick -16 innings, both pitchers - complete games!!! Giants 1-0 over Mil. Braves - ah the Good Olde Days.) ... but OOTP certainly help keep me ruin'd!

OOTP is just the best. I found Baseball Mogul years ago in a bargain bin and it was a decent start to what I had been searching for since I was a kid in the '80s.
Once I played OOTP, I found utopia. The uniforms with facegens satisfy my need for graphics, the 3D stadiums silvam has done has bumped that up a notch, and the baseball card templates many people created also are an awesome touch. And I just love historical play, quirks and all. I just wish I had OOTP 30 years ago during those summers when I used dice, coins, a deck of cards or even random number generators on a calculator to fill up notebooks with pretend baseball scores. |

Losing the blue dice from my "Pursue The Pennant" game was a complete catastrophe, one summer...and do you think my mom would drive me around to find a replacement IMMEDIATELY??

Go back and play a game with 16. When you hit 1 the pbp gets displayed the cursor remains in arrow form the entire time. Smooth as the ice on the creek behind my neighbor house before some idiot on a snowmobile ruins it.....
Play a game with 17. When you hit 1 the pbp gets displayed but the little arrow turns into a spinning blue circle. Stats display changes are choppy. My guess is the spinning circle is due to 3D being processed in the background, even when it's turned off. |

Decades later, I tried an OOTP competitor, not knowing about OOTP. I remember contacting the developers and suggesting that what they needed was an AI general manager for the teams (to this day, it's never happened). A year or two later, I discovered OOTP 13. Never going back. |

Okay, I'll get flamed for this but in some types of play I think some of the other games do a better job (I haven't played any of the others in 6 years since I found OOTP). I will give a slight nod to some other games for single season replay, head to head play, internet leagues. OOTP wins hands down for career play, fictional play, sports management play (waivers, Free agents, setting ticket prices, etc) options/customization, COST, and FOR A DEVELOPMENT TEAM YOU CAN INTERACT WITH.
