Catch A Waiver

I don't make a lot of suggestions on here, but I recommend checking the Waiver Wire as often as you can because sometimes there are some really good players that become available. I'm managing and GM'ing the 2016 Chicago Cubs in OOTP17 and claimed 2 players: Matt Joyce of the Pirates and Trevor Bauer of the Indians.

Joyce is someone that I looked at recently when Jason Heyward missed some time with an injury. He played for Joe Maddon in Tampa Bay from 2008-2014 and is a pretty good left-handed bat and outfielder with some pop. He would be a nice addition to our bench and a back-up option if one of our outfielders needed a day off or got hurt.

As for Bauer, he's only 25 and was once considered to be one of the top pitching prospects in baseball. Cleveland used him as a relief pitcher and I could envision him as a long reliever/spot starter with Chicago.

Who are some of your biggest pick-ups from the waiver wire?

I've actually seen J-Hey himself on the waiver wire. Nice pickup to go alongside Giancarlo Stanton.

Speaking of Stanton, he's out for the year in my OOTP replay. I'm like "Geez, doesn't this guy get a break? Bad enough he's playing for the Miami Marlins in front of 5,000 people, but now he's got to miss the rest of the season?"

The AI also waives top prospects occasionally which is not realistic but good if you're trying to build a team anyway possible like me.

I live here in SoFla and i watch plenty of Marlins baseball and i can say with certainty that it is NOT 5000 people.

You have too many zeros.

I grabbed Gavin Floyd and Mike Montgomery off waivers from Toronto and Seattle respectively and they both are keeping my Indians afloat when I lost Carlos Carrasco, Josh Tomlin and Cody Anderson to injuries during the season.

Floyd had an ERA over 8.00 with Toronto out of the bullpen, but has made 11 starts for me and is 4-4 with a 3.95 ERA and has put up a 2.10 ERA in his last 3 starts (going 2-1).

Montgomery has quietly been by 3rd best pitcher (after Kluber and Salazar), and in 17 starts is 5-7 with a 3.71 ERA. I just got Tomlin back and should be getting Carrasco back in a couple weeks, so hopefully I can make a move on the White Sox and retake the lead in the Central (currently 2 1/2 back).

In another save, I picked up Caesar Hernandez and he ended up being a regular starter for me in LF, CF and 3B over a span of 6 seasons. He never hit under .285 and was averaging 8-10 homers and 60-70 RBIs. I had to let him walk because he was demanding over $9 mil per season and I had two prospects ready to take over at 3B and in CF, and Brantley was still very productive in LF....couldn't bring myself to pay a backup that kind of money....plus my owner is cheap.

I mentioned someplace else that, for the first time in my OOTPB playing career, I am checking the waiver wire regularly and I sure have benefited from doing so. What is different now is that I am using the Manager's Office screen with one box dedicated to Notes and Tasks. It tells me immediately when an "interesting player" is on the waiver wire and provides a handy link. Invaluable.
