MLB 36 (A 10+ year process)

Welcome to the start of my "Expanded MLB Universe" - my attempt at a long-going, multi-team MLB sim. The plan is to have a 36-team MLB by the 2025 season. I will be simming out 2016-17, then expand by two teams for 2018. There will be some franchise shifts, then a final round of expansion with four teams by 2025.

I've already plotted out how things will look, and am really happy with the plans. However, there is still a lot of graphics work I have to do. However, I want to get a start on the dynasty reporting now, while my excitement levels are up there. Thankfully, since the expansion is a 10-season process (2018 to 2027 for the final minor league expansion), I don't need to have everything ready from the beginning. Still, it'll be akin to building a road while I'm driving on it.

I'll start by simming out the next two seasons (2016 and 2017) and letting you know what's happened in this alternate universe. Then, it's on to the expansion draft, and the fun stuff will begin!

Most of the posts will be regular posts. The newspaper format, quite frankly, is because I can, but is way too labor-intensive to use for every post. Expect it to come out for special occasions, about once a season or so. Also, it won't just be The Oregonian - I'll be mocking up fake newspapers from around the country.

I hope you enjoy reading about this, and that I have fun building it!

Thanks, it was fun to do but that Charlotte front page took me all night! So most posts will be more "normal". I'm not a graphic designer by any means but I used to be a copy editor, and firing up that desktop publishing software brought back some memories...

Now that the two expansion franchises for 2018 have been revealed, a little more info:

The Charlotte Monarchs will play in the AL East
The Orlando Orcas will play in the NL East
There is no other realignment at this time. Ultimately, the goal is three six-team divisions, so flipping to four divisions per league for a few years seems silly
Interleague play is gone until expansion is complete. I couldn't find a 6/5/5 schedule that supports it. I'll make a fake newspaper article that goes into more depth Interleague play is back in! Thanks to Sandman I now have a 32-team, three division 6/5/5 schedule that supports interleague play.
The Charlotte AAA team will move to Greensboro and become the Patriots. As Don Beaver owns it IRL, they will be affiliated with the Monarchs. This will start an affiliate chain reaction that will result in the Mets finally getting the hell out of Las Vegas
AAA expansion will be Jacksonville and Ottawa. I'll go into more depth about the minor league shifts in another post

A quick update:

Right now, I am replacing all of the logos in my game to the style that I prefer. You can follow that progress in this thread (and download the logos if you want)

I have updated the development and talent randomness factors to the ones Spanish Lefty has come up with. His research and data convinced me to give them a try.

Once the logos are complete, I'll sim 2016 and 2017 and report back. Then the real fun can begin!

This is still going ahead - I'm just doing some test runs to see if I'm happy with the results and then I'll probably wait until the public beta is no longer a beta to begin.

In one of my tests, in 2024, I noticed the Astros had a player named Vincent Corleone. So I did what any right-thinking person would do - I stopped the sim and gave him a nickname.

He's quite good - I might have to take this test out a few more years and see how his career winds up.

Edit: It's 2026 and The Godfather just won his first MVP award. He's made the All-Star team each of his four seasons in the bigs and won the Silver Slugger at 1B for the last three.

I've nearly finished my testing - just want to run one more league with my settings and the new patch, to make sure it handles the expansion well. I've gone back to my first test because I wanted to see how Vincent "The Godfather" Corleone's career turned out. He ended up pretty good - elected to the Hall of Fame in 2043. Now that I've found that out, things can begin for real.
