Real life historical combined with fictional league?

I've really never messed around much besides with the default quick start leagues over the last few years.

With the new additions to historical play, can you play a historical game starting in say the early 1900s and have everything evolve realistically with real minors, but run a fictional league in the universe? I'm thinking of doing this and having a small start up league and see how it evolves and maybe try to steal away players from the real MLB organizations..

I'm sure if this can be done it has been.
