Tips on Historical Sims

This has been my first year playing OOTP (And I'm addicted, have hundreds of hours logged this year) and I can rebuild a current day team into a powerhouse like it's nothing. However, I am horrible at getting a historical team off its feet into success. Any basic tips you'd suggest?

Thanks!

Edit: On my Trout post, that is not my only issue, was just a question I had.

Are you using the reserve roster or trying to have a minor league system?

At first I was attempting to use minors systems, but recently moved towards reserve rosters.

For example, using the '69 Expos, I drafted 19 y/o Trout (5*) and after a month being in my reserve, he turned to a half star, which still confuses me.

Do you have recalc turned on, or player development, or both? Sounds like you're doing random debut historical. I play those with recalc and player development on. If you leave recalc off, Mr. Trout is at the mercy of the player development system...and it answers to no one.

I deleted the league, but I want to say reclac on, which could be the reason for the decline. *facepalm* lol

No. Opposite. If recalc is on, he will follow his RL career path (read: be awesome) until he runs out of stats (after his age 22 season, or 2014). Then, he will be at the mercy of the player development system, which he should be because you need to have some checks and balances in place, or guys will play forever, and you don't want that either.

Historical adjustments

Sorry if you already know this: I don't know about 1969, but from starting in the 1870s, I understand that we have to adjust our expectations of individual players according to the era-adjustment factors that you see when you set up your game.

For example, a player with a high power rating and plus-power-power admiration from your scout might end the 60 game 1874 season with no home runs. In 1872 the home run champion in my game had one home run.

So, your instinct about which player to acquire might work well in one era, and not in another.

Gentlemen, wouldn't selecting recalc based on historical performance keep Trout highly rated? Am I wrong, or wouldn't having that not selected diminish the ratings of a player who just finished a bad year?

Excellent point for sure.

Batters were certainly allergic to walks and HR back then, but you do have tools at your disposal to control statistical output, like auto-calc, which means you don't necessarily have to watch things like that if you don't want to. You could also set up a 162 game schedule in every season. It's not everyone's cup of tea, and certainly not for the purists, but you do have options in OOTP.

So, should I use minors or reserve rosters? Or does it depend on the era

It's up to you. I use reserve rosters, and play random debut historical, with my statistical output set to 1984, but that's just me. It takes a lot of fiddling at first because there are so many different settings to learn, but it's worth it to plod along at it because eventually you wind up tailoring the game the way you want it.

After all: "It's your game, play it your way." Your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to figure out and hone in on what "your way" of playing the game is because there are soooo many different ways to play it.
