Smile Historical Exhibition Mode Explained

Hey folks,

One of the features we're very proud of is the new Historical Exhibition feature which lets you essentially choose between two different modes:
  • Select any two teams from history (1900+) to play a game or series against each other, or...
  • Select any historical World Series to replay (which features accurate World Series rosters).
Once you have selected your teams (or World Series), you can tweak a few settings. First you can select the series length and the series mode, dis/enable injuries, define an active roster limit and then the statistical year / era. The latter is important, as this is used to calculate the player ratings (normalized against each team's specific year and then adjusted to the era) and sets up the league totals as well as the strategy settings (i.e. rotation size & strategical tendencies). So, when you have the 1927 Yankees play aganst the 1996 Braves and select 1927 as the era, the Braves team will behave (and perform) as if it was 1927 as well. Obviously when you select a World Series, the correct setting is selected automatically.

Once you have made your choices, hit the "Create Exhibition" button. The teams & players get imported, the series gets created and you will be taken to the next step, which is the roster setup. Here you can drag & drop player between the active and the reserve roster.

Then, click the "Play Ball!" tab, and you're ready to go. You can play / sim each game, check stats and box scores.

Alright, once the games are completed, you can be happy and click on the "Return to OOTP Main Screen" and from there play another exhibition if you like.

By the way, the exhibition will be stored as a regular game in the "HistoricalExhibition" folder, so you could back this up or access it like any other game from the Load Game dialog, maybe for exporting stats or
checking the box scores again.

We'll have a more detailed look at this feature in one of our upcoming Road to Release articles. To wet your appetite, here are a few screenshots

Love historical replays

Thank you for adding this feature. This helps to answer all those "what if's". The main thing is, though, it's all for FUN.

Have to say, I originally voted no when Markus proposed the idea, thought it wasn't worth the trouble

I was absolutely wrong, this is an awesome feature, I'm really loving it

Markus did a great job with it, and it's just such a blast to use, so much fun. It adds so much to the game. I think most everyone will love it. It's cool enough that it's almost enough reason to buy OOTP17 in and of itself even without factoring in of all the other new features!

This is why everyone has to appreciate the hard work of Markus and co. A last minute feature added for the people who voted yes and it looks amazing. Pre-ordering very shortly!

I guess the series are going to be limited to a certain number of games, right?

It'd be much much better if it was a text field that allows to input any number, such as 100 or 500 to be really able to get big data sizes and run some interesting matchups.

Can you tell us the max games to sim at once (I bet 7 game series)? Thanks!

9 games is the maximum. The reason is that internally the series is set up like a playoff series and has the AI act accordingly.

Sorry if this is over my head, but how do you adjust ratings per era? Obviously players from the 1920s head to head with modern teams would be crushed.

Nope, they would not. What we do is calculate how the players acted / performed towards their specific league average, and based on that we normalize the ratings toward the selected era. So, a guy who hit 10% more HR than league average will hit maybe 5 HR in 1906, but 15 HR in 1987. Makes sense?

Not for the exhibition mode. At least not yet... we'll probably add that later.

Hey Markus, I (heart) you for adding this.

But if I rematch the Royals vs Mets and Lucas Duda makes the play at home plate, I'm going to say the game is broken.

You can already do this with the Simulation Module in 16. (near the bottom of the Play menu)
