I'm Very Particular About Nicknames

I make sure that there are no RNG nicknames in my universe. Essentially, players don't get a nickname unless they earn it. This year I made one exception. Only one player in the amateur draft was a given a nickname this year and he is in my organization.

He will never be cut. He will be given every opportunity to succeed. He will remain in my organization until he retires.

Let's see how far he can advance over the years. There will be no edits.

When he retires he will be made a coach in my organization until his death in OOTP 17. No edits on the coach-creation either.

He is a Perma-Legend.

There are nicknames guys think they earned in their backwater high school. And there are nicknames they get from me.

Sometimes they're kind or just cute or third-rate funny. Nick "Brownie" Brown. Daniel "Sharpie" Sharp. Luke "Duke Smack" Black.

Sometimes they're just convenient. Ben "O-Mo" O'Morrissey. Conceicao "Concie" Guerin.

Sometimes though they come from the heart and are hard-earned. Juan "***cramp" Diaz. Luke "Useless" Newton. Daniel "****head" Silva. Tim "Dumpster Boy" Webster.

Looks like he was "Mr Irrelevant" to use the NFL phrase (i/e the last pick of the whole draft).

Thanks for the responses everyone.

No matter what he turns out to be I have a side-story to keep me immersed for quite some time.

I'll post annual follow-ups but since I play out every game we may never get to his coaching career.

Definitely, the best nicknames are the ones WE give the players, not the auto-generated nonsense.

Maybe it's a circumstance like HP relates, or a special accomplishment. Maybe it's a peculiar name that just begs for a nickname to be inserted in between first and last. Maybe it's a quirky facegen pic that reminds you of somebody or . . . something.

Nicknames gotta come from the heart! So, gotta remember to clean out the nicknames text file before starting a new league! Or do a whole bunch of editing every time a draft class emerges.

I leave the nicknames alone they come in the game I only change them when the make no sense like a fictional character named Gary Williams who plays for the Indians and has the nickname "Mr. Padre" or a guy named Mark Jackson with the nickname "Wild Bill" or Japanese guy with the nickname "Cowboy". In those cases I will change them to something very absurd like "Sushi D*!?" Or "Blue Balls" or "Tiny Pecker" I also have a "2 inch cock" please excuse my language I also have a guy with a nickname " reach around quote " "Wiener rash "

Some of those sort of names are okay in terms of irony. I know a guy who was ... rather large ... while at school, and he got known as "Slim Bits".

He saw his first game action around the 1/2 point of the rookie season. His family is so proud. He didn't let his condition hold him back.

I think the random names have been pretty good in my games. I had a guy set the all time HR record in my league as a catcher with 714 (yes I know, pretty insane he tied Ruth) and only a couple years into his career he became known as Jonathan "Goliath" Powell. There were a few others that were completely fitting but that one always stuck out to me.

What do you do to ensure no random nicknames appear, yet you are able to add your own? I want to do the same thing.

When I auto play the draft I do it one pick at a time. If I see a nickname I delete it. Sounds like a lot of work?

It's not, really. Maybe 10 minutes. After the the first 10 rounds there aren't too many nicknames left.

As I play if I see one as I go it gets deleted. (This can happen due to international free agents or scout finds.)

I play slowly and read all of the news and I generally go through the active roster of every team at least once during the course of a season. It is very rare that I come across a nickname that I didn't create.

Will you keep us up to date on his growth?
I will.
