OOTP5.exe error message

I don't know why, but invariably, every time I run OOTP5, a Win2k error window pops up, telling me that OOTP5.exe has generated errors (unspecified), and that I will have to restart the program. This happens even when I do nothing - I opened up the game once, but before doing a thing I read something on my desk, and the error popped up.

I have tried turning off all the sound options and the menu animations. I have rebooted my computer. I have run it often with nothing else running. I have no clue whatsoever why this keeps happening.

However, before the error message pops up, everything runs fine, including sound and animation. The error message also pops up at completely random times, never on one specific thing.

I am running an Athlon 733 with Windows 2000 and 128 mb of RAM.

The exact message I get is :

OOTP5 has generated errors and will be closed by windows.
An error log is being created.

I believe that from 8.1b - 9 will work.

I'll try that Steve. That's probably the issue.

Thanks again. I'll be over this weekend to wash your car, per our agreement.

Steve, I appreciate you help on this one, but I tried downloading DX9 and I got the same error message - the exact one posted by atomheart. I know you are busy, but I think the problem (for me, at least) lies elsewhere.

Uh-oh. It's going to take me 2 hours to download the 9.0, which I don't want to do if it doesn't work. Darn.

Try disabling the sound and see if that helps.

I am also having these problems. I get the error message for what seems like no particular reason. It's a different situation each time.

Seems like this may be a Windows 2000 problem.

Windows 2000 Service Pack 2
Pentium III 866 Mhz
512 MB ram
90 GB free on HD
NVidia GeForce III
Santa Cruz Sound Card

Is anyone else having this problem? I'm curious to see if there is something about Win2k causing this, and even more curious to see if someone has figured out how to solve it.

--atomheart, are you running Win2k too?

Indeed I am. Service Pack 2. (pro)

I'm not very familiar with 2000, I've used 98 until recently.

This sucks, guys. I've disabled everything I can think of, and still, it boots me out randomly.

I was running 8.1. I just downloaded 9.0, I'll report back later if the problem persists.
