Fire/Snowflake icons

Do the hot/cold icons indicate a recent trend or are they an indication of future performance?

For example, if someone has a snowflake icon is that just telling me that they have not done well in the recent past? Or does it also mean there is some behind-the-scenes modifier that will depress their performance in future games until the snowflake is gone?

Means they are hot/cold at the current time. You can also see some players who are hot/cold on the team home page under Whose hot/cold at the bottom of the lineup.
