playoff roster composition
In a league with roster expansion approaching, im looking at how to shape up my roster for the playoffs. Would anyone consider an extra roster player over the extra pitcher, the DH is utilized, and I will be using a 4-man rotation. Here are the bubble players in a nutshell
1) Former ace-level pitcher demoted to the bullpen, due to age, diminishing ratings, and poor starter stats. Currently being used as a long man 2) LOOGY - high stuff, low control type, former starter in the minors but I dont like pitchers with splits and low control as starters. both of the two who could get cut from the playoff rotation are lefties, so they can be a LOOGY if needed. has options 3) 2nd RHP MR, low leverege type, mid season call up cause the last guy was struggling, nothing special, slighly better stats than the long man, but lacks the stamina and has options. 4) AAA slightly bust Right Fielder, never developed as expected, being paid like an ML starter, but i replaced him this year as he was only a backup last year, but would still be a useful PH or platoon bat against LHP. Above average in RF and slighly below average at LF and 1B. (.265 type hitter, will hit roughly 10 HR and steal 10 bases over a season if given a full time ML job) Bullpen is currently CL, RHSU, LHSU, workhorse righty MR and the guys above. |

Key thing is that there are more off days in the playoffs. You don't need 5 SP so you can take a 12 man staff down to 11 and add a position player.

i'd even add you don't need 7 relievers, either. you will likely use your bullpen earlier than in the reg season, but you can easily picth them in back-to-back games, and many are fine 3 days in a row, because of so many days off. i'd only slice 1 off, but even a 5-man bullpen won't get tired much.
my 5th starter is typically better than my long reliever. so, the long reliever is typically a bubble player each year. one of these two is unlikely to be on the playoff roster. only keep the loogy if he is actually good. compare his vs l ratings to your other relievers. also, consider that a lefty batter typically has lower ratings facing a lefty pitcher. even so, it's not hard to have a righty that is actually better against lefties. |

That's not necessarily true if using OOTP-generated post-season schedules. Those will, overall, have fewer off days than real-life major league post-seasons due to the starting dates for series floating rather than being fixed.

But I wasn't talking about that, so my point stands.
