A good idea that needs to be worked on
I know things in this topic have been mentioned, but I guess I'm just getting annoyed because it's an excellent idea that was not properly implemented in the game.
I'm talking about "owner goals". Great idea and real life. However, there are way too many holes in it. Stupid (sorry, no better word) comments from the owner. Sign so-and-so to an extension. Excuse me, he's a bum and has been sitting the minors. Sign so-and-so to an extension. It will cost you more than 30% of your budgeted payroll, but do it so I can complain later that you've gone over budget. Sign that home-town player (whomever it is). Am I supposed to scan the database looking for someone born in Denver? Nice try but sorry you didn't win. Excuse me, are there no papers where you live? We won. Acquire an MVP player. Sure, I'm sure I can get one for a song who won't cost me anything so you can't complain I'm spending to much. Get me a top-5 first baseman (or whatever). What is a top-5 first baseman? My criteria might be a little different from yours. Improve your defensive efficiency. Where do I see where I rate because I have no idea. Improve your bullpen ranking. Is there a place to look or do I have to figure out the ERA for all bullpens and see where I am? Those are just a few to get you on your way. Don't scrap this idea because it's good. But as we used to say in the software business, we want a Cadillac and not a Chevy. (I don't think Cadillac stands for the cream of the crop anymore). Don't scrap this, just work on it so that it's an enjoyable, challenging and not silly feature of this game. There you go. Constructive criticism, I hope. Thanks.

One thing to remember is that the owner goals are a brand-new concept, and very rarely is anything perfect during the first go-around. So yeah, they've got a bunch of flaws, but they're also not just going to stay as they are. They'll be worked on and refined in subsequent versions.
Personally, I actually LIKE the ludicrousness of some of them. "You want me to re-sign WHO?!" isn't an immersion-breaker for me, it actually draws me in because it requires creative budget managing. "Why the hell do we need to upgrade at first base?!" doesn't come across to me like the owner is out-of-touch, just that we have different views of the same player. "How the hell do you expect me to acquire an MVP?!" is certainly a legitimate complaint, but I can absolutely see an owner determined to improve his club's popularity and not considering the difficulty of the request. Would I like to see all of these improved? Yes, definitely. But right now, I don't mind the frustration they provide. I find it fun to have to try and run the club with a ridiculously demanding owner giving you pointless requests. Also, as has been pointed out before, having a good season tends to supercede the owner goals. So if you think they'll be detrimental to the team, you can usually just ignore them and if you have a good year, it won't matter much. Btw, you can see your Bullpen ranking and Defensive Efficiency under your team's Info tab. Last edited by Fyrestorm3; 06-18-2015 at 07:57 PM. |

2. Hometown players suck to look for but I'm sure they are going to work on that later. This has been mentioned a ton already. (In fact everything you mention already has probably a dozen times already). And yes if you're playing as the Rockies you'd look for someone around Denver. 3. It's a known bug and has been fixed by a mod. Something in the text was messed up. he says you didn't win but you still get credit for it. My guess is it's going to be fixed in the next patch. 4. Pretty much the same as #1. Sign him or don't. Of course MVPs cost money. 5. League reports - positional strength by position. 6. Team home screen under rankings as Defensive Efficiency. Seriously it's on the team home screen. You can also find it under league reports - league fielding stats 7 Team home page then the info screen. In fact this page tells you almost everything. Nobody said it's perfect but you didn't say anything that hasn't already been said before and I answered a few of your questions. Don't look at them as goals coming from the owner. Look at them as goals coming from higher up. Many of them are more things a GM might tell a manager (i.e. we have the talent to steal more try it etc). Also winning trumps the goals a ton so win and the goals won't matter much. Last edited by ra7c7er; 06-18-2015 at 08:10 PM. |

Owner goals can be turned off. Even better, if you have yourself checked as cannot be fired, you can view them with interest or ignore them completely . . . or maybe even try to keep the old man happy by actually accomplishing a few of his requests (which is what they become thanks to that "cannot be fired" option
).

I really like the owner goals. I would certainly like the option to easily search players by proximity. Also, I'd like to see more recognition for the emergence of top caliber rookies. For example, after a few years of building I might have a top SP or Bat who is a Cy Young / MVP caliber player. I wish the owner would be like, "sorry, I was wrong that we needed to add a Cy Young/MVP caliber guy, when you already had one."

I didn't like it at first.. but it does add a layer of difficulty to the game, which is much needed... at least IMHO.
![]() Matt has hinted that winning above all trumps most of the owner stuff.. so win! |

They were designed to be more like a side quest. So you may not agree with the goals, but you don't have to go all out for them. I do agree that sometimes I get goals that I don't like, so maybe I make a small effort. But I've also had cases where I was debating whether to trade for a guy, and then noticed he was a former MVP winner, and that was one of my owner's goals. Helped push me to do that trade. I might have done it anyways, but it was a nice little extra that pushed me to agree to the deal. *edit: I'll add, I do agree that it still needs another version or two to refine how it's done. The text was changed to be more dynamic in one of the patches, but a condition was missed sometimes which caused the owner to not tell you when you won. Credit was still given internally, but the wrong text came out. Those issues should now be resolved. There's no plans to scrap it, but I will certainly listen to any and all suggestions on ways to make it appear less random, or to make it more fun and less frustrating Last edited by Matt Arnold; 06-19-2015 at 12:48 PM. |

Another one that needs work - sign player X to an extension. Only problem is he has zero intention of talking and every intention of walking.
Not much you can do to satisfy that goal. So this is where owner interaction comes in. "Hey boss, I tried to resign him but he's intent on testing the market. Maybe if you have a chat with him he might change his mind". It's out of my hands so the owner might as well try.
