Here's an idea for you

Most MLB NFL NHL MLS NBA teams are located in major Metropolitan cities. But you now have a league made up entirely of Micropolitan cities. What is a Micropolitian city you may ask?
The OMB defines a Micropolitan Statistical Area as one or more adjacent counties or county equivalents that have at least one urban core area of at least 10,000 population but less than 50,000, plus adjacent territory that has a high degree of social and economic integration with the core as measured by commuting ties

Here is a list of them
List of Micropolitan Statistical Areas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Unlike current minor league that had some
Major cities in them these are all Micropolitian cities.
Great for fictional minor and Independent leagues

Surprised Ottawa/Peru is so high. Ottawa is small town located on the Illinois River and there isn't much there. Peru is about 10-15 miles West of Ottawa also on the ILL river. Ottawa/LaSalle makes more sense which are right next to each other. Wondering why Aurora/Naperville is not on that list which combined is the 2nd largest metro area in IL. What is the difference between Metro & Micro?

My leagues make use of a lot of micropolitan areas in Illinois. I think actually every micropolitan area has at least one team.

I stupidly clicked without reading and looked for Long Island (that is, suburban Nassau and Suffolk Counties, not the portion of L.I. that supports the Brooklyn and Queens boroughs of NYC) before realizing that we have only about 2.8 million people too many to be a Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Then I looked for us on the Metropolitan Statistical Area list. We are not listed there either! 2.85 million people and we cannot get our own mSA or MSA! No, we are part of the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area, population 20 million. Where the heck is the sense of identity in that, I ask you?

I long for a mSA, a "peaceful, restful place, where a man can slow down to a walk and live his life full measure." A place like . . . Willoughby.

"Willoughby? Maybe it's wishful thinking nestled in a hidden part of a man's mind, or maybe it's the last stop in the vast design of things - or perhaps, for a man like Déjà Bru, who climbed on a world that went by too fast, it's a place around the bend where he could jump off. Willoughby? Whatever it is, it comes with sunlight and serenity, and is a part of The Twilight Zone."

Honest question. Why should the Nassau/Suffolk demographic/metro/whatever you want to call it area be separated from Greater NYC?

And a good question. Well, if you lived on Long Island, and by that I mean the two counties in the middle and eastern portions of the island, you would know that we have a lifestyle and culture very different from NYC (although the distinction is growing less prominent with population growth, overbuilding, and shifting demography in recent decades).

A while back, there was serious talk about our counties seceding from New York to form our own state! Too small, you say? Not really; according to recent census estimates, "Long Island" (Nassau & Suffolk Counties) would be the 35th largest state by population, ranking between Kansas and Nevada. Heck, we are only 700,000 people behind Connecticut!

So when they lump us in with NYC, Newark, Jersey City, etc., it just doesn't feel right. But no matter, a MSA is just a construction by the Census Bureau. When you say "Lawn Guyland" around here, you are talking about us 2.8MM on this part of the island, not the combined 5MM living in Brooklyn and Queens. Heh, it's a wonder this island don't sink with all these folks living on it!

Padreman, I'm sorry for diverting your thread. I will stop my nonsense now. ()

You could have a league with teams in Willoughby, Cliffordville, Homewood, Maple Street, Happiness . . . not sure about Dachau and Hell though.

Just looked it up and of the 20 micropolitan areas in and including cities in Illinois my fictional world includes 19 of them. The only one that isn't represented is a mostly Iowa and Missouri micropolitan in which the largest Illinois city is only 2500. And even that one I used in the leagues I made in OOTP15.

I think 19 of 20 without even trying is pretty good.
