Fictional Question?
Every time I start a fictional league with default player creation settings the first two or three years have very low ERA (about 3.25) and very low BA (about .240) for the league averages. After the first few years it normalizes to about ERA (3.90) and BA (.266) and will stay that way for the duration of the league. How can I avoid the first few years having such odd totals?

Sim past the odd totals and then delete all the history and player stats and have your inaugural draft....
I always sim 25 seasons before begin..... |

I generally do this too - in previous versions especially you'd get really out of whack totals sometimes in the first few years of a league. I think this is better now but can still happen, so playing a while and clearing the history prevents a few problem years from dominating the record book.

When you get to preseason. Select the option to release all players and hold an inaugural draft. Make sure you erase all league history as well. Nothing worse than playing that first game and realizing your players have stats.

Does doing this tend to bloat the league file? How do you keep it small-ish?

It seems that the initial created players are generally constructed differently than the drafted players who join your league afterwards. That's why this phenomenon occurs. Like Quest, I usually sim out maybe 10-15 years then delete league history. Then, personally, I like to sim out another large chunk of time so that there are some records and league history by the time I take over. That's just me though. In a perfect world, I wish that this type of thing could be done by OOTP automatically but I've always done it this way so I'm used to. That being said, it takes a while to do all of that simming before the game is where I'm ready to jump in. |

I'd just like to mention that I do not think this is anywhere near the issue it used to be 3 or 4 versions ago. It's just the way I've gotten used to creating leagues. Also, I play stats only, so I do not delete the stats and history until after the inaugural draft.
It used to be that a lot of very young players were created fully developed (18-20 years old), and so that this initial group of players would always dominate the league leader boards for eternity. I'd sim 25 years to get rid of everyone from the initial pool. But that is not an issue so much anymore. But I have noticed the phenomenon of most fictional leagues being pitcher paradises for a couple of seasons before leveling off. |

The reason you see the lower numbers at the beginning of a fictional league is based in how the game creates players. You'll get a few really high end older players created (more than you'll tend to get developing in your league). In turn they will dominate for a couple years till they retire. It's once those players retire that you will start to see "more normal" stats. It does seem to happen with pitcher more than hitters which is why you see lower BA and ERA.
As has been said sim a bit and you'll be fine. |

I don't go 25. I'm good with 20.

If you do this make sure you don't delete retired players. You'll end up with coaches that have the wrong bio.
Leave all of the retired players alone.
