Pitching a Perfect Game (Part III)
The following things occurred to me while playing OOTP under the influence of medical marijuana:
- What if we had a mechanism on the screen during a game that would allow us to blog to ourselves (or others, if online) during the game. And what if the blog was permanently recorded, thus becoming a living diary of the season -- or whatever else we want it to be.
- Way too many 4-unassisteds in this game.
- It would be cool to have a clock on the screen, so we know what time of day or night it is at the stadium.
- Create some notorious “flakes” – guys who become a problem (suspensions, or whatever) because they do a lot of stupid stuff. And give each guy a "flake" rating, so we know what we're getting in a trade or a draft.
- Instead of a microphone or a cartoon face, how 'bout giving us the option of uploading a photo of the actual broadcaster(s) for each team?
- Fielders should have slightly lowered defensive ratings in foreign stadiums, where they don’t have home-field knowledge.
- Give us a little bit of drama and uncertainty in the play-by-play ... tease us ... we love it like we love sex.
- As I write this, my team has scored eight runs on nine hits in the top of the first inning, and we’ve only got one out. In The Perfect Game, my 3-hole hitter gets one right in the ribs right now, and the benches clear, and about five guys get kicked out, and one gets hurt. And then, an inning later...
- How 'bout giving us a really wild rundown every once in a while ... or a really bizarre defensive play ... or ... and how about more interesting tidbits about a player or coach in the play-by-play? (Stuff pulled from his bio information, history, stats ...)
- Just experienced my first-ever rundown! Awesome, guys. More of that stuff.
- Just gotta say this: The trade AI simply needs to be much better.. I think the majority of trades make almost no sense at all, and OOTP Baseball is too great a game for that.
- Have I mentioned how cool it would be to know who hits the longest home runs (average distance)?
- A stat I’d like to know during a game, without having to leave the game screen: how a guy is hitting/pitching in his last few games …
- I wanna know if it makes a difference when I hold a runner on base or not. I also want an occasional hint -- once in a while is OK -- that I might be affecting the base-runner by throwing to first … or by ignoring the guy. No way to know now.
- Ways to mess with our minds (a good thing!) via the play-by-play: “Wills has a huge lead over there at first base … and Marichal knows it …”
- I wish pitchers would gradually lose velocity as their pitch-count rises … and as their careers grow longer and injuries mount.
- I want pitchers to show fatigue earlier than expected sometimes.
- I love it on those rare occasions when a reliever can’t get warm in the bullpen. Wish it happened just a little bit more often.
- Rain. As much rain as we see in real life in any given area. I want to play in the rain. I want players to get injured in the rain. I want to get rained out and have to play a doubleheader the next day. I want players to slip in the rain and fail to score, or let a grounder roll to the wall etc. I want to be forced to decide whether to go to replace my starting pitcher after a lengthy delay, maybe after getting info from my pitching coach, or the pitcher, himself, or the trainer …
- I’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating: I wanna know who’s warming up in AI’s bullpen. And I want AI to pay better attention to lefty-righty matchups. He ain't dat bright when it comes to that stuff.
- It’s too damn easy to hire a phenomenal coach for every slot in the organization. Those guys should be rare and challenging to obtain.
- It would be nice to be able to pick the kinds of stats we want on the game screen for the batter and the pitcher. I don't really care how well a guy hits on a 3-1 count, but I'd love to know how a guy's been hitting in his last 4, 5, maybe 10 games, so I know whether to walk him or not. I know where to find it, of course, but it would be nice to have stuff like that on the game screen.
- What if we could call the pitches from the dugout? If a pitcher has better command than one pitch than another on a given day, it would be nice to be able to make the adjustment.
- I wanna know if throwing to first affects the base-runner. It certainly should, but there's no way to know.
