Union Association and Players League

1884 UNION ASSOCIATION

Teams:

Altoona Mountain City
Baltimore Monumentals
Boston Reds
Chicago Browns
Cincinnati Outlaw Reds
Philadelphia Keystones
St. Louis Maroons
Washington Nationals

Schedule Characteristics:

SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G112_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="112" start_month="4" start_day="17" start_day_of_week="5"

Season begins April 17 and ends October 12. Teams play each other 16 times during the season. Weekday games start at 3:00. Weekend games start at 1:00. Double-headers start at noon and 3:00, except for July 4 double-headers at Washington and Baltimore, which start at 10:00 and 3:00 to accommodate St. Louis and Cincinnati, which travel between the cities, playing in the morning at one and in the afternoon at the other. Sunday games only at Chicago, Cincinnati, and St. Louis.

This is the schedule that was devised prior to the start of the season, and which was quickly made obsolete as teams began dropping out of the league. Altoona folded first, followed by Philadelphia. Chicago moved to Pittsburgh and then disbanded. Kansas City, Wilmington, St. Paul, and Milwaukee came in as replacements before the league limped to the end of the season. The National League snatched St. Louis, the strongest franchise, and the rest of the league collapsed.
