Can My League Work in OOTP
I'm in a league that currently uses Diamond Mind. We want to use OOTP because it seems far superior, but I'm not sure if our rules and set up will work. I have messed around with OOTP, have looked through the manuals, and searched Google, and can't seem to replicate my league set up. I'm looking for some guidance on how to achieve what we need and get me out of antiquated technology. Our high level league needs are as follows:
- 24 team league - Fictional teams with real MLB Players - Simulated games using the most updated stats (this year we used 2013 next year we'll use 2014) - Usage limits for players with less than full season stats (PA, IP, preventing limitless specialists or lucky part timers from dominating) - No full farm system, but draft for prospects (only can use once they finally accumulate MLB stats) - FA contract amounts and lengths are dictated by league supply and demand - Games are simulated weekly after owners set lineups/rotation - I'm guessing that we'd need to have an online league I know it's a tall favor to ask and I'm not needing a huge explanation. I just want to know the easiest game type to use and what general settings I'd need to alter to reflect what I've outlined here. Please help us leave the dark ages! |

So, most of that you can do, though I think in general you will be happier with a few paradigm switches. League setup is completely customizable and you can have fictional teams with real players. Farm systems can be whatever size you want (including no minors). You won't need the usage limits - the game is smart enough to know some guy with 12 ABs isn't Hank Aaron. You won't need the rules about prospect usage either.
It might be a bit tricky to do exactly want you want in terms of progressing to the next year. OOTP doesn't really work like the "season disk" or "card set" model most other games do. It can work that way if you play historical seasons, but isn't really meant to using current players. It is really meant to start with real life players from 2014 (for example), but then progress under the in-game development modelling. It is probably possible to do exactly what you want, but I don't think you will want to jump through the hoops required to make it happen that way. I suggest a paradigm change in that you start with real life and let the game create a new history going forward. Online leagues require an FTP host as well. It helps if the commish of the league has a bit of IT knowledge to make this happen. Last edited by TribeFanInNC; 10-17-2014 at 05:17 PM. |

Thanks so much for the response. I'm all for paradigm shifts. I actually work in transformational change for a living. However I think it would be hard to give up having real data drive each season. For me personally it allows me to really follow major-league baseball more than I ever would normally. Plus I think it would be hard to get 24 guys to make the shift. It sounds like a historical league would be our best bet. We would just use the most recent historical data. We would have to re-create the league every year in the newest software. Would the financial aspect of our game throw a kink in that philosophy? Could we Turn off most of the features that we wouldn't need? We have a lot of owners from IT backgrounds so we should be covered there. I apologize in advance for grammatical errors since I am talking into my phone.

Your league will import into each new version with no problem. All salaries, contracts, players, teams, league/team history, etc., will all transfer easily from older to newer versions of OOTP. But, if you don't want to use the game's player development engine and simulate each season via the projections, then you'll have to do some roster modifications using Excel. With your league setup, it wouldn't take that long to do. If you decide to take the plunge into OOTP, I can set you up with instructions and a couple of Excel templates to help you out with the projections. Thank you so much. That's good to hear that folks have done something similar. I really appreciate you offering to help us. I'm thinking that I'll set it up with OOTP 15 reflecting our DMB season this year. Figure out the team management aspects once it's set up and then take it back to the fellas. I think they're not going to take the plunge without some proof it can work. After that we will all get OOTP 16 next spring. Once I get some free time is it ok to reach out to you via this forum?

OBSL Commish - I think we're ready to take you up on your offer to support setting up our league in OOTP. What is the best way to contact you?
