Fewer fringe players demanding ML contracts

It seems like every offseason a pretty high number of career minor leaguers or longtime AAAA players with a few cups of coffee request major league contracts and will hold out for one...this makes it harder to add good minor league depth. I would like to see contract demands become more realistic in 16.

Once the regular season starts, they'll usually stop requesting ML contracts.

I have a different problem where these players will not sign a low level major league contract but demand a bonus and a minor league contract. That means I'm out the money right away and on the hook for a minimum MLB contract if they make the 25 man.

I think it's more realistic to give a guy $700,000 on a 1 yr contract vs a $700,000 bonus and $485,000 if he makes the team.

Makes it impossible to bring them in for Spring Training though...

Many high A prospects do want major contracts before the season and during spring training. That's why they get "invited" to spring training instead of being signed with teams. They go to spring training and then get a contract based on how they did.

Perhaps instead of changing the way players request contracts they should allow teams to "invite" FAs to spring training so the team can see them play.

or just make minor league contracts with ML options more accepting.

I agree, I make ample use of low free agents as of late and I like to use an invite to spring camp to see how they fare.

I do not have a problem with FAs requesting major league contracts, it makes sense.
