Historical vs Real World
Couple of questions in the differences between starting a Historical versus Real World game. I've played a few single seasons with the Pirates in a real world game and thought I would try a historical 2013 season mainly because I wanted to not be bogged down with some of the stupid contract offers like paying Wandy Rodriguez, an average pitcher at best, $13,000,000.
1. I understand the player ratings change all the time but some of the player ratings are significantly different. For example Russell Martin is rated 46/46 at the start of the historical game but in the real world game he is rated at 74/74 with 100% accuracy on. 2. Also most of the good farm players are gone, for example Gregory Polonco was signed by Pittsburgh as an Amateur FA in 2009 but he is nowhere on any of the farm teams and he is not listed when I do a Player Search in the historical game? 3. Does it seem like the players seem to be more accommodating when negotiating salaries in the historical game? I've offered a couple of lowball contracts to players in the historical game and they've accepted them. Never thought I would get back into baseball but this game has definitely renewed my interest. More addictive than crack, I think I need an intervention. Thanks in advance. |

First, let's define terms. When you say "Real World," are you talking about the "NEW STANDARD GAME - Play with real 2014 rosters"? Because, if so, that's actually what is called a Quickstart Game that comes with OOTPB. It was designed by a team of guys who make judgment calls on such things as player ratings.
When you say "Historical," you used "NEW HISTORICAL GAME - Play any historical season (1871-2013)," correct? Well, the difference there is that you are creating a new game by calling up historical data that ships with OOTPB - I think it's called the Lahman's Database and it's a bunch of .csv files stored in this folder: Documents\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 15\stats. I don't play historical but from what I can gather, the game creates player ratings based on how you choose certain options, such as Base Current/Potential Ratings on . . . (read more about this here). This would explain why, in your "Historical" game, Russell Martin is rated differently than in your "Real" game. As far as Polanco goes, I see he's in the "Real" game, which is a tribute to the makers of the MLB quickstart. He's not in the "Historical" game, however. Even though the minors are populated with many real players, it's not comprehensive. You can prove that by starting a new historical game and NOT requiring all minor leagues to have complete rosters. Only certain real players are included - the rest would be fictional if you did require full rosters. That's a drawback of the Lahman's Database, not OOTPB. No. 3 is a good question. There is a personality factor in the game (assuming you are playing with this option turned on) called "Greed." In the "Real" game, those quickstart designers that I mentioned may have made a judgment call on these (or left them as randomly generated, perhaps). I have not a clue how personality traits are assigned in the "Historical" game but I strongly suspect that it is random. Personality traits in themselves are not part of the Lahman's Database, for sure. You are going to love this game if you are the person indicated by your last paragraph. Yes, don't overdo it! It will eat up a ton of your time if you let it.

Thank you for your response Bru. I just assumed that if I started a Historical game that it would be a complete roster set. I'm not saying that it's a fault of the game, just saying that that's what I assumed and that's where my confusion came into play.
So if I understand correctly the db's are different, created by different designers, depending on if you select a New Historical Game vs a New Standard Game? I did try what you suggested with the Gregory Palonco idea. I selected a New Historical game and without requiring the minors to have complete roster and he wasn't listed there either. My next question is, I looked on the OOTPMods site to see if there was a db with complete 2013 rosters, including minors, but no luck. So I went to the developers website and saw that they were no longer selling OOTP 2014. Looked on Amazon as well. No luck. Any idea where I might be able to purchase a copy of the 2014 game or where I could get a complete opening day 2013 roster set? Thanks for your patience with my Noob questions. |

The MLB quickstart (your "Real" game) probably started with the Lahman's Database. The quickstart developers created a new historical game just like you did but they were very meticulous in also creating nearly every, if not all, minor league player in existence in the spring of 2014, so they created Gregory Polanco. When they were done, they saved it as a quickstart to ship with OOTPB. Hold on for the second answer. I want to check something.

OK, I'm back with the answer.
First, go here: Index of /ootp. You may want to bookmark that website for future reference because you can also get interesting things there. Don't worry, it's legitimate to go there and download. The other archive you may be interested in is Index of /newsletters. At the first website, go to the folder labeled 14.7.42 (or 13.10.37 - I'm not sure whether you want OOTPB 14 or OOTPB 13. Open the folder and click on ootp14setup.exe (or ootp13setup.exe). It will start to download. Install the game, then click on the Purchase OOTP 14 (or 13) Now button. You will see that 14 (and 13) are still for sale for $19.99. Note: You may realize that the quickstart game (it's named Majors.quick) is already installed. Forget about what you may be thinking because you need to purchase OOTPB in order to open the quickstart and you cannot just open it up in OOTPB 15 directly. Just sayin'.
