Possible Scoring Error

Pitcher Riordan of Milwaukee allowed a homerun in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. The boxscore has it as an unearned run but I disagree. The first batter in the inning reached on an error but was erased as the next batter hit into a double play. The third batter of the inning hit a game-tying homerun.

See attached boxscore clip and game log clip.

This appears to be a known limitation. A report of the same flaky scoring decision was made in this thread -- leadoff guy gets aboard on an error, erased on a GIDP, subsequent runs scored as unearned.

Instead of a Chinese Room, John Searle should have used an earned/unearned run calculator to argue against strong AI.

8 billion bonus points to anyone who even remotely knows what I am talking about.

I have 'complained' about these type of scoring errors since ootp8 or so....

I wish the game would just prompt us to decide if the runs earned or unearned if the code can not be developed to do so....

Or perhaps let some of us try to tweak the code itself

I hope I can convert the 8 billion bonus points into something like a $1 discount on BTS or a mention in OOTP16.

I will be the first to admit I would NOT be remotely able to help tweak the code. But I agree that this should be relatively easy to fix. I understand there are some earned/unearned decisions that the game can not make, as my understanding is that the game needs to make the decision immediately, without knowing how the rest of the inning will go. But that does not describe this issue. Replaying the inning without the error right at that moment when the homerun was hit would have made it clear that the run was earned. So I would consider it a flaw in the scoring logic, rather than an limitation.

Earned or Unearned Runs needs to be calculated after the inning comes to an end. Perhaps if that was included in the inning summary it might be easier to correct????
