So many different ways to play this great game...
I have tried nearly every different way to play this game, but in the end, I am always drawn back to "stats only", solo play of course. I just set up a 16 team league, and had an initial draft. There are absolutely no ratings, including steals, speed, etc. The "only" thing you have going for you is your scout. Talk about a real challenge!
And after the season starts, the next fun part is the first year player draft. Looking at a prospect that is "tearing" it up in HS, but your scout says "his future as a batter looks bleak", so what do you do? Remember, there are no ratings, stats only. And the "only" thing you get for a pitcher, is velocity, and what type "extreme fly ball", etc. I plan on folowing the career path of many of my draft picks, comparing what they did in college/HS, and what that translates to in professional ball. Just like in real life, can be very much a "crap shoot." And then the "trade proposals" you get are awesome! They always say, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Well I've had other teams inquire about certain players, and while they are having mediocre seasons(majors or minors), and my scout says they're an "average player", what's the AI seeing that I'm not. Then I start asking myself questions like "Maybe this guy will be a supestar", or the very least, "a really decent player", who'll be around for many years. What I do, should I trade, should I hold, should I fold, should I stop pulling my hair out? Anyway, it's Friday, in a great mood, and just thought I'd share! |

I agree with you that stats only is the best way to play. The uncertainty adds an amazing dimension to the game.
Of course, other people's mileage varies.

But that is one of the things that makes this game so great, some many ways to play and each person decides what is best for them. There is no right or wrong way to play, the only mistake is not playing at all

Exactly. Everybody will hopefully find which way is the most fun way for them to play and then play the game that way, which is "their way."
People have posted some really strange ways to play this game, but as long as they enjoy it, more power to them.

I'm an OOTP slut.
By that I mean I will read in a thread a way to play OOTP that I haven't tried only to find the next day that is how I'm playing. I suppose saying I was a Baskin-Robbins 31 flavors guy would be a more family friendly was to describe myself.

Yup so many ways. Me, I either manage only, letting the AI act as GM, or I simply pick a team to follow and become that team's number one fan. Either way I play/watch all my teams games.
