New cards for the old game!
Maybe there is some life in Titlebout after all. For any old-timers that still have the board game, a new set of heavyweights is on ebay now. This is not the Trunzo brothers (who I think were working on some new table top game a while back but I don't know if it got off the ground).

interesting ... wonder who the guy is that made them ... he even added new ratings and charts for the game ... wouldn't this be some sort of copyright violation? Just curious ... tempted to buy them just because

I guess Hasbro acquired the copyright when they purchased Avalon Hill. They haven't shown any interest in republishing it.

I purchased them and received them yesterday. It is a very interesting issue. I created female cards for the game some time ago, but haven't sold them.

It's been 15 years since there were cards produced (and that set was different from the first and not well received), the company that licensed the game was bought by Hasbro I think and they certainly haven't done anything with it. At some point I would think that even if there were a copyright issue, there wouldn't be anyone out there willing to spend a dime to protect themselves form a harm that doesn't exist. Avalon Hill, Hasbro and the Trunzos have not likely made a cent off the table top game since the last century.

true was just curious if it would be an issue or not .... I honestly couldn't imagine sitting down and playing the board game anymore but I might buy the cards just to have them ... also kind of curious who the seller is ... whether or not they are around this board

If I had to guess, based on the "Hurricane" Tommy Jackson rating, it is the "Ratings of the Day Council" individual who used the handle, "djday45."

Also Purchased a Copy
I also purchased this new set of cards for TB and must say they look very nice. From some of the notes and posts on another sports forum, it looks like several years of testing went into these rankings. This set and the new charts that come with it have got me seriously thinking about dusting off my old TB board game for the first time in years (if I can still find it and all the components, mainly the FACs) ...

Sad if not comical. More action on the ancient card game than on the PC version. I find I spend most of my time with the game tinkering, adding cornermen or venues or whatever. Hunting for photos. Less and less time actually playing the game.

One Negative on the Card Set
After spending some time reviewing the boxers in the set, I was dismayed to discover that a personal favorite was not included in the 180 fighter set: the first (and to the best of my knowledge still the only) college graduate to capture a World HW title, the inimitable James "Bonecrusher" Smith.

All-Time HW Tournament Using New Card Set
Just wanted to let anyone interested to know that I have followed through and am running an all-time HW elimination tournament using this new card set, and the new charts and rules. Since it's the board game and not the computer game, I decided not to post the results in this forum, but in a forum devoted to the TB board game.
Here's a direct link for anyone interested: All-Time HW Tournament Using New Title Bout Cards | Title Bout | BoardGameGeek Already have had a couple of upsets in the preliminary qualifying rounds, including a "2" defeating a "7." Will continue posting results after every six bouts or so, so look for weekly updates here on out. |

The "new" cards received good reviews over at Delphi forums, but Jim Trunzo posted a "cease and desist" last week as he apparently has plans of reviving TB. We shall see.

Here is a link to Delphi's Table Top Sports forum:
Delphi Forums Login*-*Welcome! Please log in. I can't hyperlink the individual messages, but you can easily search for them. The original thread announcing the new cards can be found in the "Market ( Buy, Sell, Trade)" folder and is titled "Title Bout new HW ATG card Set" Jim Trunzo's "Title Bout: Cease and Desist" thread is located in the "General Discussion" folder. here is the wording of the post for those interested ... very classy IMHO
Gentlemen: Allow me to make few comments about Title Bout: the Game of Professional Boxing. My name is Jim Trunzo, who along with my brother, created and designed Truco Boxing, Title Bout: The Game of Professional Boxing for Avalon Hill and Sports Illustrated, and all the various iterations on the computer version. While we no longer own the rights to the Title Fight computer game, we do own all rights to Title Bout the board game, including the cards and all other components. It has come to our attention that our rights are being infringed upon by several "fans" who have decided to release card sets on their own. I applaud their efforts because creating a set of boxer cards that perform accurately is no easy task. However, I must request that this cease and desist because we are in the process of having the product be revived by a new company. 1. This is not the first time someone has tried to fill the gap and we are not upset, but rather flattered. Nobody is getting rich off us at this moment. We understand that. However, because it can hinder our business dealings, we have to politely request that anyone involved in the making and selling of our product stop to avoid legal action being taken. 2. I have been in contact with one gentleman, a very knowledgeable person and seemingly a gentleman, who has advertised on Ebay. I did not insist on a removal of his offer at the time for a number of reason, including the fact that he had invested money that he had yet to recoup. He understood that I would let things ride temporarily but that I would be getting back to him with a decision on where we were going with Title Bout. My understanding is that his ratings are quite good and his product is acceptable, considering he is doing the creating himself. He and I will speak further on this matter soon. 3. I would like to publicly make a statement that I have never revealed before in an effort not to embarrass a certain individual nor make it seem as if I was passing the buck, so to speak: the last set of "official" card ratings were not done by the us, Jim and Tom Trunzo. I was going through serous health problems at the time and Tom had certain personal issues of his own with which to contend. We foolishly (easy to admit now) allowed a long-time fan to do the ratings. Unknown to us, he submitted them to AH prior to getting our final approval. By the time we got around to seeing the ratings and play-testing some of them, it was too late to prevent AH from printing what turned out to be a horrible set of cards. My pride was hurt but the individual who did the ratings was severely handicapped (in a physical sense) and I didn't want to visit more grief on his head. Tom and I decided that we would offer all purchasers a large discount on the next set (that would be done by the two of us) to make up for the waste of their money on the set under discussion. However, before that could take place, AH dropped the game from their line. My apologies to all of you who suffered through that set of cards. At the time, I was only concerned with getting my health back. Mea Culpa! I hope that nobody reading this thinks that this is some heavy-handed attempt to stomp out a few little guys efforts in what I am sure is a labor of love and not a major source of income. It is simply a matter of business and the law. We hold the rights to all parts of the game and must do what is in our best interests, now that we are working on a deal that could see the game revived. Sincerely, Jim Trunzo |

I agree Hanson, classy & good news, I hope it is revived!
I'd get it just to have cards of new, modern day fighters. Last edited by hamed2; 07-31-2014 at 03:39 PM. |
