How is this a save?

We were up 17-1 when my reliever comes in and pitches 3 scoreless innings but he gets a Save??

It's dumb that it counts as a save, but it does.

It is very rare in today's game for a reliever to get 3 innings, especially at the end of a game, but 3-inning saves were quite common 35 years ago.

I see this not so rarely. I tend to hate my relievers, so I chase them out for the seventh, eighth, and ninth just to torture them.

Wasn't there a save credited in that 30-3 game a few years ago?

Yep. I think the starter went five and the reliever went four. The reliever was a former starter, which is usually the outcome now if a pitcher as a save; he was either a spot starter or is the mop-up/long guy out of the bullpen.
