Nicknames or Not?
Title says it all.
Without an option to turn player nicknames off I would much prefer that they are not in the game. They are stupid, completely random, and ruin the immersion. What do you think?

Like Chavez "Abnormal" Rodriguez?
Like any spanish name with a english nickname? Like a 16 year old kid who never makes it to the majors?

Not only are the nicknames absurd but the frequency at which they appear is ridiculous.

This is a very bad poll. It's just about the popularity of nicknames. A better poll question would be "are you in favor of an option to allow nicknames to be turned off"??

That is the next poll. I wanted to know how badly they were hated, first. Once I had data on that I wanted to see how willing people would be to accept an option to turn them off. That poll will come next. My guess is that a small majority would rather not have them at all if there was no option. My second guess is that a super-majority would favor the option to toggle them on/off.

I am by no means a programmer. But this seems like it could be a very simple fix. A single line of code asking a yes or no that lets the league file have access to the nickname file.

Can I vote option 3 and say I like the nicknames, they just need to be less common?

I prefer them but there should be an option to turn them off.

I don't really care about nicknames until they become immersion-breakers. But a lot of people do like them. I don't really want to see features taken away. However, for my own selfish purposes, I'd rather just go without them.

So far, 15-15. It's pretty much what I figured. 50% of the people like player nicknames and wouldn't want to lose them. 50% dislike them and would rather see them gone without an option to turn them off.
This poll is more enlightening to me than the other one. To me, this poll more strongly suggests that an option to toggle nicknames on or off is really needed. The other poll only tells us that everyone is good with there being options. We already knew that much. But this poll shows us how divided it really is. 50/50 right down the middle. That, in and of itself, carries more information than the other poll. So in this sense I disagree that this is a "very bad" poll. It collects more important information--the actual divide.

I, for one, enjoy the silliness of the nicknames - They are good for a laugh! You can always change them is you don't like them. And at the end of the day, is it really that big a deal when you look at the amazing product that these guys put out? Sure, argue about small issues all you like, but it is a pretty freaking thing they do!!!
That said, I must say, your attitude in the other poll forum is quite rude to suggest that people who vote contrary to your opinion do so just to do so! Some of us might actually disagree with you. |

Maybe another option is that some players' nicknames could disappear later, to only show up in their history. So maybe a kid has the nickname "Exterminator" through college, but if his power stroke fades, my guess is the nickname would go with it. That might be a way to not have them as common at the higher levels. |

My main issue with the nicknames is that they are used for multiple players in a league. I have a league that I've run since OOTP12 and has gone from 1903-2046 and there are multiple players nicknamed "Animal", "Kingfish", "Pendragon", "Clutch", etc. I would prefer that the main option be to make the frequency "One Nickname Per Player Per League".

How about deleting all the names in the nicknames.txt file and then starting your league? Will that do it?

probably one of the most interesting things to happen was to see a player with the nickname "WildFire" in one of the drafts. Interesting because that's the alias my brother has used for some 15 years on the internet and the player also has the same first name.
I didn't pick him but he ended up having a great career. I like nicknames, I agree with mtopham |
