How to create this league
I have been noodling on creating a league that is structured similar to the English Football League.
There would be a stack of leagues. I am thinking six to start. Each league would be comprised of ten teams. The top most league would be comprised of the best teams. The second league would be slightly below the first. This would carry down through each league. At the end of each season the top two and bottom two from each league would move up and down according to their records. There would be a championship at the end of each season where the top team in each league would play towards an overall winner. My first question is how to create this league? I cannot find a way within the OOTP tools to make such a league. I have more questions that I am withholding until this first problem is resolved. Without this first piece the rest is pointless. Thanks in advance guys. |

Update
I have managed to create the six leagues.
Initially the custom wizard would not let me create the structures and numbers I desired. By selecting the largest structure possible I was then able to go in and change each league to my desired size. I don't know how things will happen as far as for moving teams up and down, multi-league playoffs, and the rest of it all. That is in its own way part of the fun of OOTP. |

There's no automatic promotion/relegation in OOTP at this time. I seem to recall some discussion of it prior to release, but I don't think it made it in.
You can associate the leagues (Game menu, I believe) and set up your playoffs that way. |

Is there the ability to manually move teams between leagues?

Oh yes, there is that. Your last place teams won't actively try to avoid placing last though. I seem to recall some discussion of a checkbox somewhere that WOULD do that, but I don't recall enough specifics to say for sure it's there or not. Hopefully someone who remembers that better than I do will chime in.

You can do promotion/relegation manually, as others have said -- but the AI teams will NOT realize they are about to be relegated, and will just play out the string. So, a lot of the bite of the idea is taken out of it.
I've heard of folks having a helluva lot of fun in a promotion/relegation online league, though.

That unknown incentive does take much out of the excitement. I suppose I could cheer for or curse them to try to make them to play with more purpose.

One thing to maybe consider would be a playoff among the bottom teams in danger of relegation. The teams will at least try and win the series.

Not shocked that a great idea came from our friend NYY, though. ![]()

![]() Anyway, yeah, the game does not support automatic promotion/relegation, and Markus has specifically said that he has zero plans to add it to the game anytime soon. What you can do is move the teams around manually at the end of each season. And DEFINITELY run a playoff series between the bottom teams in the league - the AI might not know enough to avoid last place, but it certainly knows how to try and win a playoff game. I would also suggest setting each league's Prestige factor appropriately, if you plan on using Free Agents. As for the playoffs between the top teams, you can put all six leagues into an Association and set up the Association Playoffs the way you want. Bottom line is, no, this type of league is not supported by OOTP's engine. But you can do a pretty good job of replicating it. |

Hey, if you're not first, you're last, Ricky Bobby!
![]() Honestly, you guys really solved the promotion/relegation problem, as long as you can stomach in your world that the last place teams fight in a playoff game/series to try to stay in the big show. Sounds like a truckload of fun, actually. Now that I only am writing about one league anymore, this might be one I mess around with in my off time, thanks for the idea, guys! ![]()

I like both the top of each league and bottom of the leagues playoffs. The prestige factor is going to be a key element. In the EFL there is the practice of loaning players between divisions. To provide the younger players with experience. I am not sure how to go about that. Do I follow the typical AAA, AA, ... structure, or have an active roster larger than 25, or in some way loan out players to lower divisions. Any ideas and thoughts are welcome. |

Creating unique structured leagues is much the fun of OOTP. Whether it be part fictional, part historical, leagues with teams around the world, all of it is good stuff.
We need a way to show this part of OOTP to people that are thinking to buy. |

I definitely agree with that. I know that Jaysdailydose has created a few quick starts, and they seem like a good way of showing off what OOTP is capable of. I'd love if when you get this squared away if you created a quick start.

I am planning to do just that. Is there a group that tests quick starts before they are posted?

Not really. I haven't created really anything in like a week either.
