National Baseball League

Hi,

I have created an Israeli national baseball league a few times and I even randomized players names a few times. Every time almost all players are Arabs and every time almost none of them are Jewish. I understand that Israel has 20-35% arabs, but to exclude any jewishness from the teams seems either a mistake by the developers or a political statement.
Is there a way that the random names will fill the teams with 60-70% jewish players, 20-35% arab players and 5-20% other nationalities?

Thanks.

Not a mistake and not a political statement. Rather, it's the result of OOTP's limit on namesets. There are only 40 namesets, so some ethnic groups get shortchanged. There's an Arabic nameset (17), but no Israeli nameset, so an Israeli league will end up with 100% Arabic names.

Yes, there's a way, but you'd need to compile an Israeli nameset. As far as I know, nobody else has come up with one.

I'm pretty sure somebody made one a couple of years ago. I'll see if I can find it.

Joe wouldn't he be half way there if he used your Jewish surname set then just did a first name set?

Thanks.

If I merge Joe's Jewish list (European jewish names) and the Israeli list (and post it where?) I assume I'd get 70-80% jewish players on my Israeli national league.
I am new to changing files; how would I implement it that the Israeli league players should be picked from that list of names?

Thanks for thinking of that, but I don't think my Jewish-American nameset would really work, for the following reasons:

  1. The names are almost entirely German and Eastern European - so, in other words, Ashkenazic. There are hardly any Sephardic names in the bunch;
  2. With the restoration of Hebrew as a spoken language, I think there has been a push to "Hebraicize" names in Israel (the same sort of thing is going on in Ireland with Gaelic). That's not reflected in my nameset;
  3. I don't have any clue about Israeli name frequencies.

On the other hand, I suppose it would be better than an Israeli league with 100% Arab players.

Joe, true but your name set would reflect the trend we saw in the Israeli Baseball League, which was dominated by American Jews.

I'd add that the name set, while awesome for historical play, has a lot of pretty outdated Americanized first names.
