Organization Structure

I have a question concerning the roles that a MLB team's minor league affiliates are supposed to play.

There are many players that seem to skip a level or more when you look at the players stats history. Players' histories sometimes show they played in AA before being called up to MLB, and some players will be in R-Billings, and then be in AA the next year.

Are the minor league levels more age divided, or talent divided, or something else? I always just assumed R was the weakest/youngest, then A<AA<AAA<MLB, and if a player was killing it in A, you would move him to AA as the next step in his development.

Is there a well respected minor league promotions/demotions and player development post on these forums, or newbie guide concerning that particular topic?

In a nutshell, I mean to ask how do I know what level a player is supposed to be in? I'm thinking I should leave it to the AI, but I eventually want to learn the minors concepts and organize them myself (without setting lineups).

What is your sim pace? If you are managing daily, then I would try to manage yourself. It adds a fun element to the game in my opinion. If you simulate pretty quickly, then I would allow the AI to do it.

The rules you use to move guys up and down is not an exact science. Just tinker with some ideas and try to replicate what works.

I devised a spreadsheet that I use to calculate (among a few other things) my own overall rating for each player. I then sort them into levels based on those ratings, then the highest potentials start. Sometimes I end up with a guy skipping levels due to offseason increases, but normally it's one at a time with the occasional repeat (aside from filler guys, who sometimes stick at a level for a few years before I let them move on).
