Draft pick compensation question

I'm not real familer with the draft pick compensation rules so I have two questions. First, did something change this year as I had to negotiate with players I signed in a round as low as the 20th. In the past I only remember having to negotiate with players that I signed in the first five rounds.

Second, since I couldn't sign the players in the below screen shot, why am I not getting compensation picks?

I've run into this issues before so I can help you.

1) If the player had a monetary signing bonus demand, even if you draft them in the 20th round, you'll still have to negotiate with them. If their demand is "Slot" or whatever the standard is, they'll just automatically go to your minors. I didn't realize this at first so I tried to snag a guy with a ridiculous signing bonus by drafting him in the 7th round, thinking I'd get him for free. But I didn't.

2) You only get draft pick compensation for players you drafted in the first three rounds but failed to sign. So none of those guys in your screenshot are eligible. For anyone you fail to sign in the first three rounds, you'll get one pick later in the next year's draft. For example, if you failed to sign the second overall pick in the first round, next year you'll get a bonus comp. pick in the third overall pick in the first round. If you fail to sign someone drafted in the supplemental round, your bonus comp. pick will come at the very end of the supplemental round.

Are you watching their sign-ability when you draft? I have had a number of HS players that had really high demands. Basically I could not sign them without massively over paying.

Thanks. I, like you, thought I could get them to sign by drafting them lower. I didn't know about the comps only for players in the first three rounds.

I've gotten comp picks for the first five rounds; I know the e-mail says "three", though.
