I have been trying to beef up my relief pitching staff, but it does not seem to be helping... era's are still way too high.
I thought that the basic ones would be movement, stuff and control. then pitch types... Any thoughts> |

I usually use FIP, K/9 and BB/9 to decide who of my fail starters move to relief. I stay away from anyone who gives up high level of HR
will always carry a comple of LH, including an exclusive LOOGY. though I can't tell you what ERA that produces (never look), but bullpen has always been strenght |

High movement, high GB % Throws hard 95+, I dont really care too much about BB for MR as long as it is not too outrageous. stuff. pitches that promote throwing hard not that i mind a good knuckler in my pen from time to time but FB pitchers. He is an example of one of the best.

The first stat I look at is BABIP, it puts the rest of the stats in context. Then IP, with a low IP one bad game can blow up the rest of the stats. After that I use the old stats, ERA, WHIP, AVG, walk and K rates.

Generally, K/9, Movement, Control, and GB%, in that order. IMO, of course only one of those is actually a stat.
Edit: And coming soon......IRS%! Yes!

Control is significantly less important for relievers than SP. Starters that struggle with control will usually see significant improvement in the bullpen.

Good fielders make for good reliever ERA as much as actual reliever abilities do, in my experience. If you're adding good relievers and still getting bad results, get better defenders to play behind them.

Ratings-wise, I look at stuff first. It's an unusual approach, but it works.

Stat
K/9 + low HR allowed will give you a great bullpen

Stuff, stuff and more stuff, Movement and 2 very good/great Pitches...a higher GB% is always better. But My Money always go towards "stuff' 1st. I prefer to have both a RH and LH specialist making sure their Stuff against the side they specialize in is max or near it. This philosophy has worked very well for me

If you're using ERA to determine a reliever's effectiveness, you're gonna have problems. ERA is a flukey stat at best for starters, nevermind relievers, who could allow three inherited runners to score, lose the game, and come away with a 0.00 ERA if none of "their" runners cross the plate.
Important stats for a reliever are WHIP, K/9, BB/9, and IRS% - anything that tells you how many baserunners the guy allows (we'll have IRS% added in OOTP15). I've also found that Blown Saves can be a decent stat - not Saves, Saves are crap. But Blown Saves tell you how many times a reliever entered a game with a late lead, and gave it up. |

most of my better relievers were strong starters in minors and college.
