At the end of the year 1978 Marvin Hagler is a tough and feared middleweight that couldn’t get a title chance in spite of having an awesome record. At the same time Roberto Duran is starting his campaign as a welterweight after ruling the Lightweight division for around six years.
The 1976 Olimpian champion Ray Leonard is starting to improve the level of his competition in his way for a title chance on the welterweight division. Finally a tall and young welterweight from Detroit called Thomas Hearns have destroyed his first fourteenth rivals on less than four rounds.
This four fighters are on the begining of the best part of their careers. There lifes in the ring will be linked and the story will reemember this four warriors with a particular name : “The Fabulous Four”

Next Fights.

January 11^th 1979 at Capitol Centre, Landover, Maryland Sugar Ray Leonard 17-0-0 (10) will face four times title challenger Armando Muñiz 44-14-1 (30) on a rematch fight. Leonard and Muñiz met on December 1978 with Leonard winning the fight when Muñiz retired with an injured arm on the sixth round. Armando Muñiz fought for a world title two times against Jose Napoles and two other times against Carlos Palomino losing all of them.

January 11^th1979 at the Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan Thomas Hearns 14-0-0 (14) will improve the level of his competition when he faced veteran hard-hitter Clay Gray 65-6-1 (46) that is a three times title challenger losing to Napoles on 1973, Espadas on 1975 and Cuevas on 1977.

February 3^rd 1979 at Boston Garden, Boston, Massachusetts Marvin Hagler 42-2-1 (34) will face Sugar Ray Seales 46-5-2 (26) on a rematch fight. On their first meeting the fight ended on a draw on 1974.

April 8^th 1979 at the Caesars Palace on Las Vegas, Nevada Roberto Duran 66-1-0 (54) will face Jimmy Heair 73-17-1 (47), Duran needed a win on this fight to secure a title fight for him on the welterweight division.

Rumors

Carlos Monzon 87-3-9 (58) retired since July of 1977 was seeing several times training hard on his hometown city Santa Fe and the rumors of a possible comeback are increasing day by day. A fight between the former champion and the current one fellow argentine Hugo Corro 47-2-1 (24) for the undisputed middleweight title could be very possible for March or April this year.

January 11th 1979 Leonard-Muñiz II

At a sold out Capitol Centre Sugar Ray Leonard 17-0-0 (10) fought his remach fight against Armando Muñiz 44-14-1 (30).

For the first two rounds of the fight Leonard eaily outboxed Muñiz hitting him with hooks and quick combinations at his own, Muñiz chased Leonard across the ring but Ray legs controlled the distance.
By the third round Muñiz started to land some punches but Leonard continued in control hurting him with a hook to the body. On this round the referee deducted a point from Muñiz due to a low blow.
Leonard started the fourth round hurting Muñiz with a pair of crosses but then Muñiz recovered as he reached the inside and connected Leonard with some good hooks to win the round but again the referee deducted a point from him due to low blows.
On the fifth round Muñiz hurt Leonard for the first time on the fight with a hard uppercut and he also dominated the first half of the round Leonard cameback on the final minute stunning Muñiz with a straight right and with a hard hook to make it a close round.
The sixth round was great for Leonard exept for the point deducion he suffered due to a low blow but on this round Leonard hit Muñiz at his own, also shaking him with a big straight right. By the seventh round Muñiz looked tired and Leonard continued easily scoring with quick combinations, the fight continued the same way on the following round.
On the ninth round Leonard stayed passive and with more courage than boxing Muñiz won the stanza, but on the last round Leonard regained the control and also scored a quick knock down on the last seconds of the round when he connected a great straight right to Muñiz jaw. Armando got up quickly and the fight came to its end.

The scorecards were 98-88, 96-92 and 97-89 for Leonard that improves his record to 18-0-0 (10).

Hearns-Gray

A full Olympia Stadium on Detroit came to see his hero Thomas Hearns 17-0-0 (17) taking a difficult fight against Canadian hard hitter Clyde Gray 65-6-1 (46). They wanted to see Hearns earning his 15^th KO win but they finally saw a real war of the ring….

Round 1: The fight started at an accelerated pace with Hearns connecting a big left-right combination and a big hook to Gray’s head but the Canadian reached the inside and connected Hearns with a well timed uppercut and a hard hook that shook Hearns but the “Hitman” cameback connecting a huge combination but Gray didn’t retreat and landed another hard uppercut Hearns clinched but after that connected a great trademark right cross to steal the round.

Round 2: Hearns started the stanza connecting a hard uppercut following by two smashing hooks to Gray’s head. Hearns also landed a hard left-right combination that shook Gray to close a big first half of the round. But then Gray connected a huge straight right that stopped Hearns cold and then a three punch combo. Hearns answered with a hook to the body and then the fighters exchanged jabs and the round came to its end.

Round 3: Early on the round Hearns continued working the body and then he connected a hard cross to Gray’s head but after that Gray landed a huge left and then he went to the inside and landed three succesive uppercuts that made Hearns retreat to the ropes.

Round 4: Hearns connected a snapping head uppercut early on the round , Gary answered with a cross Hearns connected a pair of hooks and Gray hesitated then Hearns connected with both hands closing the combination with a murederous straight right that wobbled Gray after that Hearns connected a right cross to the head and Gray collapsed to the canvas. With a lot of difficult Gray got up at nine and the bell saved him.

Round 5: Hearns went for the definition working behind his jab combining with his right cross. Gray answered the jab and attemped to reach the inside. With Hearns attacking Gray connected a hook to the body and then cameback with the right to the head and dropped Hearns for a four count. After Hearns got up Gray didn’t have time to go for the KO.

Round 6: Hearns connected and uppercut and a straight right,for a minute the fight seemed to slow its pace but at the two minutes mark Hearns connected with the jab and followed it with a lighting straight right and dropped Gray that got up at four on bad shape, Hearns went direct at him and with a wild overhand right he dropped the Canadian again but Gray managed to got up and survived the round.

Round 7: Both fighters looked tired as they exchanged jabs. Hearns chased Gray but the Canadian conncted a big right on counterpunch and dropped Hearns for a short count. Gray saw it as his great opportunity and went to the inside Hearns avoided a pair of punches but he get caught by a big uppercut and collapsed to the canvas again. Is it the end?.... No, Hearns got up at seven and finally survived a late straight right by Gray near the end of the round.

Round 8: Gray ran at Hearns and threw a big right but Hearns avoided it and connected a big hook to Gray’s liver and dropped him for the ten count, putting and end to this big war of the ring.

At the time of the stoppage the scorecards were 64-62 for Hearns, 63-63 and 63-62 for Gray. My scorecard were 64-63 for Hearns. The compubox data showed that Hearns landed 181 punches at 41-9 % and Gray 135 at 29.1%

Hagler-Seales II

On the Boston Garden Marvin Hagler 42-2-1 (34) and Sugar Ray Seales 46-5-2 (26) met for the second time on their careers after the first fight between them ended on a draw on 1974.

Seales started the fight on big form connecting a violent hook but then Hagler turn the round on his favor with a hard left and a right cross. On the last seconds of the round Hagler suffered a cut right on the eyebrow after an accidental headbutt.
The second and third rounds were very even stanzas with Hagler connecting the harder blows especially with his left hooks but with Seales clearly outlanding him. Hagler eneded the third round bleeding from his cut.
The fourth round was still very close but Hagler seemed to steal it with a hard combination near the end of the round.
Working behind his jab Seales showed his best boxing on the fifth round, Hagler hurt him with a hook at the middle stages of the round but Seales also shook Hagler with his own hook near the end of the stanza.
On the sixth round the fight continued the same way with Seales outworking and outlanding Hagler that also managed to connect a big a left hook and a snapping head uppercut but Seales doubled Hagler with a big hook to the body.
On the seventh round a more aggressive Hagler shook Seales several times with his hooks to win the round on a very convincing way.
The eighth round had great action with Hagler dominating the first minute also making Seales retreat with a left cross but then Seales connected his right cross and reopened the cut then he started to hit a blooded Hagler with both hands until the referee stopped the actions and called the doctor that after seeing the cut stopped the fight, so it went to the scorecards.

All three judges had the fight 68-67 for the winner …..Marvin Hagler!

On March 3 at the Olympia Stadium in Detroit, Michigan Thomas Hearns 15-0-0 (15) and Clyde Gray 65-7-1 (46) will met again on a highly expected rematch after their war on January.

Finally former undisputed middleweight champion Carlos Monzon 87-3-9 (58) announced his comeback to the ring to face current WBA/WBC champion Hugo Pastor Corro 47-2-1 (24) on March 31 at the Luna Park in Buenos Aires.

At the Convention Center, Miami Beach, Florida Sugar Ray Leonard 18-0-0 (10) faced undefeated but untested englishman Colin Jones 8-0-0 (5). Leonard received some critics for choose a young and inexperienced rival.

Leonard start the fight at an accelerated pace scoring with hard hooks and lighting combinations against a Jones that hardly connected a punch.
On the second round Leonard connected a big left to the head but Jones answered with a hard straight right, for the rest of the round Leonard controlled the actions from the outside.
Leonard controlled most of the third round with the highlight of a big hook to the head but on the last seconds of the round Jones connected a hard uppercut.
On the fourth round Leonard and Jones trade blows on a even terms but Leonard’s speed always made the difference.
Early on the fifth round Leonard connected a big hook to Jones chin and dropped the englishman for an eight count. Jones got up and managed to survive the rest of the round and also finished it trading blows with Leonard.
The sixth round started with Jones landing a big uppercut followed with a hook to the body that seemed to hurt Leonard that answered the fire and with a short hook opened a cut on the right eyelid of Jones.
On the seventh round Leonard was in total control of the actions when he froze Jones with a hard combination and when Jones raised his arms to cover up Leonard connected a hook to the body and dropped him for the second time on the fight. Jones got up and survived the rest of the round.
On the following round Jones attemped to go to the inside but Leonard’s hooks dictated the rules. On the last seconds of the round Leonard dropped Jones with another body shot.
Early on the ninth round Jones connected a hard straight right but Leonard answered using his jab like a piston and reopened the cut forcing the referee to stop the fight.

At the time of the stoppage the scorecards were 79-70 80-68 and 78-70 for Leonard. The compubox data showed tha Leonard landed 285 punches at 45.5% and Jones landed 93 punches at 20.7%.

The Olympia Stadium in Detroit is full of fans ready to see the second fight between Thomas Hearns 15-0-0 (15) and Clyde Gray 65-7-1 (46). On the first fight Hearns won by KO8 after a real war in which Gray visited the canvas four times and Hearns three.

But this time the fight was totally different, early on the first round Hearns landed a violent left-right combination and wobbled Gray but the Canadian cameback and scored with both hands and then went to the inside but Hearns received him with the left jab and then he connected a great right hook to the chin that dropped Gray for the ten count. The fight was over in only 100 seconds!

Hagler-Robles

On the Civic Center on Providence, Rhode Island, Marvin Hagler 43-2-1 (33) looked for a convincing victory against journeyman Rudy Robles 35-10-1 (13) after his very complicated fight against Ray Seales.

Only seconds into the fight Hagler connected a left cross and made Robles retreat, then Hagler went to the inside and scored with a pair of short hooks one with the right and the other with the left hand. Hagler took a step backwards and connected a left cross, Robles shortened the distance and connected an uppercut and a hook to the ribs but again Hagler took a step backwards and connected a wild overhand left that landed on Robles’ chin dropping him for the full count at the 1:42 mark of the first round.

Leonard-McCarthy

At the Community Center on Tucson, Arizona Sugar Ray Leonard 19-0-0 (11) faced journeyman Babs McCarthy 11-11-2 (6).

Leonard started the fight connecting a pair of combinations with both hands that seemed to hurt Mccarthy, then Leonard feinted downstairs and went upstairs with the hook and made McCarthy retreat confused, Leonard chased him and connected a snapping head uppercut and after that Mccarthy looked ready to go, Leonard continued his attack and connected a three punch combo to the head and when McCarthy raised his arms to cover up Leonard connected a hook to the body and dropped McCarthy for the ten count at the 2:37 mark of the first round.

Monzon regains world title!

After eighteen months out of the ring Carlos Monzon 87-3-9 (58) returned to his house the Luna Park on Buenos Aires to convincingly defeat Hugo Pastor Corro 47-2-1 (24) and to win the undisputed (WBA/WBC) middleweight title. At 36 Monzon looked rather good and his boxing skills and power were too much for Corro that was making his first title defense.

Monzon dominated the fight from the first round using his long straight rights and some hooks to punish Corro. On the second round Corro attemped to reach the inside but Monzon received him with a great uppercut and dropped him for a short count. On rounds three and four Mozon easily domianted Corro outlanding him from the outside.
On the fifth round Monzon seemed to be tire and Corro clearly outworked him to win the first round of the fight. Rounds six and seven were close and with slow action but on the eighth round Corro again did a bit more than Monzon and he also continued his momentum edging the ninth round too. At any time Corro put Monzon on trouble but on this period he landed more punches than Carlos.
By the tenth round Corro was winning confidence and decided to attack but again Monzon power said present when he connected an uppercut and dropped Corro for a seven count. Corro got up and attmeped to cover up but Monzon hurt him again with a violent hook to the body, but Corro survived the round.
Monzon continued dominating on the following round but Corro reacted on the twelfth one.
On the thirteenth round Monzon dropped Corro again with a left-right-left combo, again Corro got up and stayed out of risk for the rest of the round.
On the following round Monzon went for the definintion and dropped Corro for the fourth time on the fight with a right cross to the head, brave Corro got up again and survived the round but taking a lot of punishment on the way.
Finally on the last round Monzon stayed on the outside waiting for the end of the fight allowing Corro to win the stanza.

The scorecards were 147-136, 146-137 and 145-138 for the winner and new undisputed middleweight champion of the world Carlos Monzon!

The compubox data showed that Monzon landed 340 punches at 28% and Corro landed 273 punches at 28.1%

At the Spectrum, Philadelphia on Pennsylvania Thomas Hearns 16-0-0 (16) was in action again facing Monroe Brooks 39-5-3 (27) that last year lost by TKO8 against Roberto Duran.

Only fifteen seconds into the fight Hearns rocked Brooks with a left-right combination then Hearns went after Brooks and with three succesive right hooks he staggered Brooks that looked totally confused, Hearns connected a big uppercut that let Brooks out on his feet and then a pair of hooks the second right to the chin and dropped Brooks for the ten count. The fight was over at the 2:21 mark on the first round.
This is the second consecutive first round KO victory for Hearns.

Breaking news

WBA & WBC middleweight champion Carlos Monzon 88-3-9 (58) confirmed that he will continue boxing and that he will defend his titles on June 30 at the Chapiteau de Fontvielle on Monte Carlo against italian-american Vito Antuofermo 44-3-1 (19).

Thomas Hearns 17-0-0 (17) will fight again on May 20 on Dunes Hotel & Country Club on Las Vegas against Harold Weston 26-8-5 (7) that came of a close UD15 loss against WBC Welterweight champion Wifred Benitez. Weston also challenged Pipino Cuevas for the WBA title on 1978 losing by TKO9.

On May 25 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland Marvin Hagler 44-2-1 (34) and Ray Seales 47-6-2 (27) will have their third fight. After losing against Hagler on February Seales fought one more time on March defeating unknown Raul Adams by TKO3.

At the Caesars Palace on Las Vegas former lightweight champion Roberto Duran 66-1-0 (54) faced Jimmy Heair 73-17-1 (47) in his way for a title chance at the welterweight division.

The first round of the fight was an even one, Duran started better scoring with some hooks from the inside but Heair dominated the last minute boxing behind his jab.
The second round was vey slow with the fighters exchnging jabs and without remarkable punches, Duran landed a bit more than Heair.
Duran hurt Heair early on the third round with a hard cross, Heair rallied boxing well from the outside but Duran caught him again with an uppercut. Then Duran connected a low blow and the referee deucted a point from him but before the round came to its end Duran landed a big uppercut that seemed to hurt Heair.
The fourth round had great action with Heair hurting Duran with a strong cross but with Duran answering with a hard hook that stopped Heair cold. Finally Duran earns the round for landing more punches than Heair.
Early on the fifth round Duran connected a big straight right that made Heair retreat Duran went after him and connected some solid punches until landing a hard cross that seemed to hurt Heair, then Duran connected two hard hooks and dropped Heair for the ten count.
At the time of the stoppage the scorecards were 38-37 (x2) for duran and 38-38.

Shutout win for Leonard against Viruet!

Sugar Ray Leonard 20-0-0 (12) made another step on his way for a title chance on the welterweight division when he scored a one-sided UD10 victory against Adolfo Viruet 16-4-0 (5). Leonard dominated the fight from the start to the end winning every round on all three scorecards and looking outstanding on rounds three and six in which he played with Viruet. An year ago Viruet gave Roberto Duran a good fight but this time was clearly outclassed by Leonard.
The scorecards were 100-90 (x3) and Leonard landed 247 punches at 32.5% and Viruet 168 at 43.5%.

Hearns destroys Weston!

Thomas Hearns 17-0-0 (17) scored an spectacular TKO7 win against Harold Weston 26-9-5 (7), dropping him four times until the referee stopped the uneven fight with Weston on his feet but looking totally spent.
Hearns dropped Weston with a great right cross early on the first round and then continued always in control of the actions using his jab to control the pace of the fight and hurting Weston with right crosses and good combinations and also uppercuts when Weston attmeped to force the inside. On the seventh round Hearns dropped Weston with a left-right combination but Weston got up, Hearns walked straight at him and dropped Weston again with an uppercut. Weston got up again on bad shape and Hearns dropped him again with a hook to the body, Weston got up but the referee not allowed him to continue fighting.
At the time of the stoppage Hearns was leading on all three scorecards by 60-52 (x2) and 59-54.

Second consecutive shutout win for Leonard!

Sugar Ray Leonard 21-0-0 (12) looked outstanding again when less than a month after totally dominated Adolfo Viruet scored another vicious UD10 win this time against tough Marcos Geraldo 30-10-0 (18).
Leonard dropped Gerlado on the first round with a wild overhand right and then he gave a beating to the Mexican on the second round but somehow Geraldo survived. Then Leonard continued winning rounds easily outspeeding and outlanding Geraldo. On the ninth round Leonard had Geraldo again near the KO with the referee watching the uneven actions ready to stop the fight. Gerlado surivived and atempped to change punches with Leonard on the last round but Sugar Ray closed his outstanding performance dropping Geraldo with a quick combination on the last second of the fight. So Geraldo heard the final bell on the floor. The scorecards were 100-87 and 100-88 (x2) for Leonard. The compubox data showed that Leonard landed 346 punches at 42.9% and Geraldo only 79 at 17.9%

Superfight: Former lightweight champion Roberto Duran 67-1-0 (55) will face former WBC welterweight champion Carlos Palomino 27-2-3 (15) at the mitic Madison Square Garden on New York on June 22. Palomino lost his title early this year by a close SD15 against Wilfred Benitez.

Sugar Ray Leonard 22-0-0 (12) will be in action again on June 24 on the Caesars Palace of Las Vegas facing journeyman Tony Chiaverini 30-4-0 (21).

Thomas Hearns 18-0-0 (18) will fight again in front of his people at the Olympia Stadium on Detroit against Bruce Curry 20-4-0 (21) that gave current WBC welterweight champion Wilfred Benitez to tough fights.

Hagler stops Seales and ends rivality!

Finally Marvin Hagler 44-2-1 (35) put an end to his trilogy against Ray Seales 47-6-2 (27) when he scored a dominant TKO6 victory.
Hagler edged an studying first round and then he dropped Seales on the second one with a strong left hook. Seales survived the round but Hagler continued punishing him on the following round especially with his uppercuts. On round four and the first two minutes of the fifth one Seales managed to box from the distance slowing the pace of the fight but on the last minute of the fifth round Hagler hurt him again with a big left hook followed by a quick combination. Early on the sixth round Hagler surprised Seales with a big straight right to the jaw, Seales retreat but Hagler connected a three punch combo and then he reached the inside and with two consecutive hard uppercuts Hagler let Seales out on his feet forcing the referee to stop the fight. At the time of the stoppage the scorecards were 49-44 (x2) and 50-44 all for Hagler.

Thomas Hearns Hall Of Famer Join Date: Aug 2011 Posts: 2,441	January 11th 1979 Leonard-Muñiz II At a sold out Capitol Centre Sugar Ray Leonard 17-0-0 (10) fought his remach fight against Armando Muñiz 44-14-1 (30). For the first two rounds of the fight Leonard eaily outboxed Muñiz hitting him with hooks and quick combinations at his own, Muñiz chased Leonard across the ring but Ray legs controlled the distance. By the third round Muñiz started to land some punches but Leonard continued in control hurting him with a hook to the body. On this round the referee deducted a point from Muñiz due to a low blow. Leonard started the fourth round hurting Muñiz with a pair of crosses but then Muñiz recovered as he reached the inside and connected Leonard with some good hooks to win the round but again the referee deducted a point from him due to low blows. On the fifth round Muñiz hurt Leonard for the first time on the fight with a hard uppercut and he also dominated the first half of the round Leonard cameback on the final minute stunning Muñiz with a straight right and with a hard hook to make it a close round. The sixth round was great for Leonard exept for the point deducion he suffered due to a low blow but on this round Leonard hit Muñiz at his own, also shaking him with a big straight right. By the seventh round Muñiz looked tired and Leonard continued easily scoring with quick combinations, the fight continued the same way on the following round. On the ninth round Leonard stayed passive and with more courage than boxing Muñiz won the stanza, but on the last round Leonard regained the control and also scored a quick knock down on the last seconds of the round when he connected a great straight right to Muñiz jaw. Thomas Hearns Hall Of Famer Join Date: Aug 2011 Posts: 2,441	February 3^rd 1979 Hagler-Seales II On the Boston Garden Marvin Hagler 42-2-1 (34) and Sugar Ray Seales 46-5-2 (26) met for the second time on their careers after the first fight between them ended on a draw on 1974. Seales started the fight on big form connecting a violent hook but then Hagler turn the round on his favor with a hard left and a right cross. On the last seconds of the round Hagler suffered a cut right on the eyebrow after an accidental headbutt. The second and third rounds were very even stanzas with Hagler connecting the harder blows especially with his left hooks but with Seales clearly outlanding him. Hagler eneded the third round bleeding from his cut. The fourth round was still very close but Hagler seemed to steal it with a hard combination near the end of the round. Working behind his jab Seales showed his best boxing on the fifth round, Hagler hurt him with a hook at the middle stages of the round but Seales also shook Hagler with his own hook near the end of the stanza. On the sixth round the fight continued the same way with Seales outworking and outlanding Hagler that also managed to connect a big a left hook and a snapping head uppercut but Seales doubled Hagler with a big hook to the body. On the seventh round a more aggressive Hagler shook Seales several times with his hooks to win the round on a very convincing way. The eighth round had great action with Hagler dominating the first minute also making Seales retreat with a left cross but then Seales connected his right cross and reopened the cut then he started to hit a blooded Hagler with both hands until the referee stopped the actions and called the doctor that after seeing the cut stopped the fight, so it went to the scorecards. Sugar Ray Leonard 20-0-0 (12) made another step on his way for a title chance on the welterweight division when he scored a one-sided UD10 victory against Adolfo Viruet 16-4-0 (5). Leonard dominated the fight from the start to the end winning every round on all three scorecards and looking outstanding on rounds three and six in which he played with Viruet. An year ago Viruet gave Roberto Duran a good fight but this time was clearly outclassed by Leonard. The scorecards were 100-90 (x3) and Leonard landed 247 punches at 32.5% and Viruet 168 at 43.5%. Sugar Ray Leonard 21-0-0 (12) looked outstanding again when less than a month after totally dominated Adolfo Viruet scored another vicious UD10 win this time against tough Marcos Geraldo 30-10-0 (18). Leonard dropped Gerlado on the first round with a wild overhand right and then he gave a beating to the Mexican on the second round but somehow Geraldo survived. Then Leonard continued winning rounds easily outspeeding and outlanding Geraldo. On the ninth round Leonard had Geraldo again near the KO with the referee watching the uneven actions ready to stop the fight. Gerlado surivived and atempped to change punches with Leonard on the last round but Sugar Ray closed his outstanding performance dropping Geraldo with a quick combination on the last second of the fight. So Geraldo heard the final bell on the floor. The scorecards were 100-87 and 100-88 (x2) for Leonard. They wanted to see Hearns earning his 15^th KO win but they finally saw a real war of the ring…. Round 1: The fight started at an accelerated pace with Hearns connecting a big left-right combination and a big hook to Gray’s head but the Canadian reached the inside and connected Hearns with a well timed uppercut and a hard hook that shook Hearns but the “Hitman” cameback connecting a huge combination but Gray didn’t retreat and landed another hard uppercut Hearns clinched but after that connected a great trademark right cross to steal the round. 10-9 Hearns Round 2: Hearns started the stanza connecting a hard uppercut following by two smashing hooks to Gray’s head. Hearns also landed a hard left-right combination that shook Gray to close a big first half of the round. But then Gray connected a huge straight right that stopped Hearns cold and then a three punch combo. Only seconds into the fight Hagler connected a left cross and made Robles retreat, then Hagler went to the inside and scored with a pair of short hooks one with the right and the other with the left hand. Hagler took a step backwards and connected a left cross, Robles shortened the distance and connected an uppercut and a hook to the ribs but again Hagler took a step backwards and connected a wild overhand left that landed on Robles’ chin dropping him for the full count at the 1:42 mark of the first round. Leonard started the fight connecting a pair of combinations with both hands that seemed to hurt Mccarthy, then Leonard feinted downstairs and went upstairs with the hook and made McCarthy retreat confused, Leonard chased him and connected a snapping head uppercut and after that Mccarthy looked ready to go, Leonard continued his attack and connected a three punch combo to the head and when McCarthy raised his arms to cover up Leonard connected a hook to the body and dropped McCarthy for the ten count at the 2:37 mark of the first round. After eighteen months out of the ring Carlos Monzon 87-3-9 (58) returned to his house the Luna Park on Buenos Aires to convincingly defeat Hugo Pastor Corro 47-2-1 (24) and to win the undisputed (WBA/WBC) middleweight title. At 36 Monzon looked rather good and his boxing skills and power were too much for Corro that was making his first title defense. Monzon dominated the fight from the first round using his long straight rights and some hooks to punish Corro. On the second round Corro attemped to reach the inside but Monzon received him with a great uppercut and dropped him for a short count. On rounds three and four Mozon easily domianted Corro outlanding him from the outside. On the fifth round Monzon seemed to be tire and Corro clearly outworked him to win the first round of the fight. Rounds six and seven were close and with slow action but on the eighth round Corro again did a bit more than Monzon and he also continued his momentum edging the ninth round too. At any time Corro put Monzon on trouble but on this period he landed more punches than Carlos. By the tenth round Corro was winning confidence and decided to attack but again Monzon power said present when he connected an uppercut and dropped Corro for a seven count. Corro got up and attmeped to cover up but Monzon hurt him again with a violent hook to the body, but Corro survived the round. Monzon continued dominating on the following round but Corro reacted on the twelfth one. On the thirteenth round Monzon dropped Corro again with a left-right-left combo, again Corro got up and stayed out of risk for the rest of the round. On the following round Monzon went for the definintion and dropped Corro for the fourth time on the fight with a right cross to the head, brave Corro got up again and survived the round but taking a lot of punishment on the way. Finally on the last round Monzon stayed on the outside waiting for the end of the fight allowing Corro to win the stanza. Only fifteen seconds into the fight Hearns rocked Brooks with a left-right combination then Hearns went after Brooks and with three succesive right hooks he staggered Brooks that looked totally confused, Hearns connected a big uppercut that let Brooks out on his feet and then a pair of hooks the second right to the chin and dropped Brooks for the ten count. Thomas Hearns 17-0-0 (17) will fight again on May 20 on Dunes Hotel & Country Club on Las Vegas against Harold Weston 26-8-5 (7) that came of a close UD15 loss against WBC Welterweight champion Wifred Benitez. Weston also challenged Pipino Cuevas for the WBA title on 1978 losing by TKO9. On May 25 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland Marvin Hagler 44-2-1 (34) and Ray Seales 47-6-2 (27) will have their third fight. Thomas Hearns 17-0-0 (17) scored an spectacular TKO7 win against Harold Weston 26-9-5 (7), dropping him four times until the referee stopped the uneven fight with Weston on his feet but looking totally spent. Hearns dropped Weston with a great right cross early on the first round and then continued always in control of the actions using his jab to control the pace of the fight and hurting Weston with right crosses and good combinations and also uppercuts when Weston attmeped to force the inside. On the seventh round Hearns dropped Weston with a left-right combination but Weston got up, Hearns walked straight at him and dropped Weston again with an uppercut. Weston got up again on bad shape and Hearns dropped him again with a hook to the body, Weston got up but the referee not allowed him to continue fighting. At the time of the stoppage Hearns was leading on all three scorecards by 60-52 (x2) and 59-54.
