Couple of GM Questions

I am about 7 seasons in after taking over the Brewers. We have a player that is probably going to be a candidate for MVP. He is in the hunt for the triple crown (although it is still early June). My problem is that I have no money to re-sign him. I have put together a couple of contracts offers for him but my owner doesn't approve due to lack of funds. However, he is arbitration eligible next year for the first time ($6.6 mil estimate so far); so, does this mean that the owner will have to fork over the cash to pay him if the arbitrator decides he is worth more than we have budgeted? I am not sure what my options are. What are your thoughts? Obviously I'd like to sign him long term before he gets too pricey for our mid level payroll.

Yes, if you take him through arbitration, the team will be forced to pay him whatever the arbitrator decides, even if it puts you over-budget.

That estimated $6.6M is factored into next year's budget, however, so the contract he's awarded will only increase your projected payroll if the final arbitration number is higher than $6.6M.

So if I offer him a 1 year contract less than the $6.6 mill my owner won't reject it since it is already budgeted?

not if the $6.6M already puts you over projected budget next year

Why not try to avoid arbitration with this player and try to sign him for 3-4 years. Start at 6.2M by 4 yrs and see if he takes it. If you go single year contracts it will cost you much more in the long run......

Example: In my last league I had a player earning 400k pre-arbitration and he wanted 5.125M for the one year. I offered 5M for 4 years and he accepted the offer.

You know, I'm not too sure about that one, actually. I would like to believe that the game can recognize that the new contract would decrease the projected payroll for next year, but I'm not 100% sure.

Wait for the off season to start. Any players that are FA eligible that you don't get comp for-CUT. Any arb eligible players you don't want -TRADE. Try to free up the money at this point AND offer him arbitration just in case you can't get the money freed up in time.
