Finances

i have around 30 or so players per minor league squad in my system. i am playing as the san diego padres with an owner who is a penny pincher so money for free agents is at a premium.

my question is if i chop down some of my minor league squads to basics (~25) and keep my international complex at a minimum (i have many players who i feel will never contribute above a ball) will it make much of a difference in regards to re-signing money and free agency allowance?

bonus question:
i have overachieved and contended with a small budget the past 2 seasons. will owners ever "get the will to win" and open up the checkbook to give me more money to bring home a championship or am i destined to trade off my expensive players because my owner is cheap?

The players in your international complex aren't actually on your team, so clearing that out will do absolutely nothing.

As for your minor league teams, it depends on how many players currently have major league contracts. In OOTP's financial system, players who haven't reached the majors don't count against your budget. The quick way to check is to go to the Salary Obligations page under the Front Office menu. All the players listed on that page count against your budget, and anyone not on that page doesn't.

If you do outright release a player with a league minimum contract, you'll have to eat that year's contract, but he'll be off your payroll for future seasons.

It won't be drastic, but generally if the team performs well (and therefore rakes in more money), your budget will go up a bit for the next season. I took over the Rays in 2012 in my MLB game and had a budget of $97M. Eight years later, it's up to $127M.

ah ok. i was just wondering if cutting some dead wood in aa and below would help me maybe sign a cheap backup or give me some wiggle room on extending a mid-level player

thanks for your input
