Should I Spend the Money?
So I'm beginning the free agent period in my fictional game. I am controlling an expansion team and the upcoming season will be the 2nd season for the team. There is an international FA I want to sign, but he wants like 17 mil per for 8 years. I was able to negotiate down to 13 mil per for 6 years. He will be turning 27 in a few days. My question is, should I spend the money even though I won't compete for a few years or hold off until some of my draft picks are ready? I will have #1 overall pick again this year.

based on my experience so far I wouldn't if he is highly rated. I found the international free agents stars to be way too good, and AI not aggressive enough with them, and it was too easy. the first 2 years of my Dynasty I signed the top guys, they became perennial all-stars immediately. :-)
but beyond that, I see no problems. and if he flops it will be a great challenge to work around the contract. in fact go for the 8 years 17M, and try and work around that. if he is good he will also become popular increasing fan interest |

It depends on your monetary situation.
If it will not hurt you go for it. Sorry for being vague. My teams play in a salary cap league and as I like a challenge I try to keep myself around 80% of max so I have a 120 million or so salary competing agains 150 million or so. Them 17 million dollar contracts are a pretty big deal for me. BUT if I see a durable high duration starter who walks two dozen batters a year or a 30/30 shortstop who plays + defense I would be all over 17 mill a year. If we are just talking about a passable left fielder and you have some in the pipeline then I dunno |

I was originally going to say no because as an expansion team it is nice to have those high first round picks the first few years and a crap ML roster really helps this cause! When running an expansion team I generally try to stockpile young controllable assets early on. However, given that this is just one player he will not likely have a large impact on you won/loss record.
Assuming the contract is not a financial hindrance it is a gamble that is worth taking. If he pans out you will have a potential franchise cornerstone or a nice trade chip for when your team is ready to compete. |
