Starting as minor league coach
How long does it usually take to become a Major League GM in OOTP, without any commisioner mode cheating?

Since when is using Commissioner Mode considered cheating?

Sure, single player games can be played however you want, but I'd prefer to save commissioner mode for fixing obvious errors rather than just giving myself stuff.

Ignore him. He isn't worth the effort.
As for your question, I wish I could tell you, but I have never tried it. I play Quickstarts and Historical, but I always just take over a team with "Can't be fired" on. |

Pay no attention to The Wolf.
As per your original question, I'm really not sure. I usually advise against playing as a minor league manager, because the game doesn't handle it very well. It's an area of the game that needs a major overhaul; I tried and got fed up with it pretty quickly. Not trying to discourage you; play it however you like. Just my opinion. EDIT: Ninja'd. With almost an identical post. GET OUT OF MY HEAD, RPRISKE. |

In short, I don't know. My only attempt at working my way up from the minors as a manager was an abysmal failure.

I tried this a few versions back (11, maybe) and quickly became bored or annoyed with it. The AI makes drastic changes to minor league rosters from time to time, so it can be difficult to deal with. If it worked like real life minor leagues, it could be fun.
But I would think it might not take long to become an MLB GM if you can find a way to win. I started as a manager at High-A and got numerous Double-A offers after one mediocre season. If you allow yourself to jump from job to job each season, you can probably accomplish that fairly quickly. |

Currently over halfway through my second season with the Mets AA club, real teams fake players. Looking real good this year but I definitely know the seemingly nonsensical changes the AI makes.

Legitimate question to all: since when is using Commissioner Mode considered to be cheating?

And I would say in response to ignore rpriske, because he doesn't know anything.

You're attacking phrasing again. What he meant was that he didn't want to "cheat" by just assigning himself to a higher position via Commish Mode, when the point of his game was to work his way up. He never said or meant that using Commish Mode in general was cheating.

i think these would be non RL situation, and i feel these are things i should not be allowed to do as a GM, and would understand why someone starting would consider as cheating. i leave myself on Commissioner Mode because i want to be able to retire the guys who fill the bottom of the FA pool every year, but i am always afraid of the over-budget allowance.. |

I haven't done this for a few versions but most of the time it took me around 3 seasons before I was given a big league offer.

I start every new game or manager in the minors. I've never had a major league offer in less than three seasons or more than five. You can cut down on a lot of annoying AI roster changes by keeping the number of minor league levels to a reasonable number. I've found that 4; R,A,AA,AAA works best. And have a roster limit on each league. 25 on the ML, 26 on the three "A" leagues and 35 on the R league. That way you can get a good minor league manager experience and not have to make massive roster changes every game day from dumb AI promotions/demotions.

Last time I started from the bottom it took me 7 seasons to be named the MGR of the NY Mets. I was manager of 4 Rookie league teams, 2 AA, 2 AAA. I managed both AA & both AAA the same season the 2nd one for no more then 15 games each time.

(I also think that playing in commissioner mode if you are trying to play it as an individual - as opposed to simming a league - is kind of 'cheating', but my 1901 league didn't have enough free agents and I had to keep going in and ensuring each team had legal rosters.) (Before the 'cheating' comment is taken out of context, intentionally or not, I mean that is the way it is FOR ME. I don't really care what other people do.)

Yeah that's how I do it too. I use commish mode to move teams, erase stupid nicknames (until I figured out how to disable them) and fix the odd problem that comes up. But I play with it off and firing turned on. I've had a fictional league running for 74 seasons now and I've had 3 managers with 20-30 year careers. Then I'll retire them and start another. Every career started in the minors or international league teams, I choose from jobs that are offered and try to do the best I can with the minor league teams and build the best major league teams playing stats only.
It's hard. Sometimes you get fired. Sometimes your career record is not so good but I've also built two dynasty teams. I've been playing OOTP since version 8 and it has never gotten dull since I started playing it this way. |

Things have changed. A few years back it was agreed that playing in Commissioner Mode was not cheating. Now some of you think it is.
Thanks for the information.
