2 Questions About Pitches

I just found a player with six pitches in his arsenal. Is that the maximum?

Also, does individual pitch ratings matter or just the overall 'stuff' rating?

I don't know but I'll make an educated guess if it will make you feel better.

My guess is Stuff is the baseline stat and the actual pitch ratings are modifiers that take effect when he throws that specific pitch. If the individual pitch ratings made no difference I doubt they would put in the time and effort to give each of them ratings.

Individual pitch ratings do matter. Markus indicated that when he revised the pitching model (V11??).

Put another way, I get concerned when I see individual pitch ratings decline even if they are not seen in the SMC numbers. Another issue is a 4-pitch starter with 3 good pitches and 1 so-so pitch. If one of the good pitches declines enough he may struggle as a starter but be ok as a relief pitcher.

This is correct!

To take it a bit further, the individual pitch ratings, along with velocity are actually what's most important. The stuff ratings is kind of an 'overall' type rating that incorporates the values of the pitchers velocity and each individual pitch rating to come up with one big number that's easier to understand.

I certainly have not been around this game forever like some guys, but I have never seen a guy with more. Just checked on a guy in my dynasty, the Scorpions' David Castillo, who had just puzzled us with his widely varied arsenal, and who I was reminded of when I read this today in the office, but nope, he too has "only" six pitches.

Don't claim you don't browse the boards in the office, guys.

A guy can have up to 12 pitches, in theory. In practice, it won't happen very often that a guy gets more than 5 or so, because he'd need absurd luck in learning new pitches to get that many. I don't know the max number on player creation, but I suspect it's six.

It would be interesting to see if anyone has seen a player with more than six.

While he's heavily thrown a single pitch, he does throw more than one distinct pitch.

Here's his pf/x chart for the last 7 years.
