Different between potential vrs actual

Why is there such a difference between his actual (2 stars) and potential ratings (4 stars), but his pitching skill ratings are shown as being identical? The only diff is a slight one in his changeup.

I thought it was a setting I had on, but there are other players that display the difference between the potential and actual pitching skill ratings.

basically I can't tell if this guy has hit his peak, or if he's cgoing to improve. He's 26. The scouting report isn't that great on him.

Stars are a very coarse scale. Look at his performance and you can see more. He is declining relative to the skills in the league. Note how bad his stats are vs last season. Is he in a tougher league? Division? Are there better pitchers, perhaps a few that missed some time with injury? Edit: his raw ratings may look the same but his performance will decline against better players.

Bottom line; at 25 I'd have him as an average/below average middle reliever. Certainly not a closer.

Mediocre reliever who just hasn't panned out. Check his draft history, he could be a high pick bust possibly.

I'd have your scout do a report on him. Chances are he is going to come back as 2/2 not 2/4. How good is your scout at scouting players at his level? That makes a huge difference as well. It's worth every dime to have the best scout you can find. I fire my scout all the time if I come across a better one and if I find a really good one I extend him until he retires. Same with trainers.

The internal ratings are on a 1-200 scale. You seem to be displaying things on a 2-8 scale. I don't remember the exact translation between the two scales, but if a guy has a 5 control rating now, that might be something like a 85/200 rating internally, and if a guy has a 5 control potential, that could be something like a 105/200 rating internally. They'll look the same on 2-8 but are pretty different in actuality.

So your guy might still have quite a bit of room to improve (and he obviously does have some room to improve in Stuff at least, because of his changeup), but you can't see that because of the ratings scale you're using.

13 home runs allowed in 62 innings is not a recipe for success. This guy needs to be throwing in a pitcher's park or AAA.

Thanks for all the feedback. I recently changed to 2-8 scale from 20 to 80 to make it harder. I guess this is one of the effects. I just took over this team and immediately hired a new scout. I'll ask for a scouting report and see what happens.

This guy needs to be traded or waived.

without firing your scout, remember that a 2 star reliever is not that great, because of the pool of mediocre pitcher who end up as relievers.

but as everyone said, the results from your guy suggest he needs to hit the waiver wire soon. maybe someone will bite, and get you off the hook.
