The Quest for .400

So, on June 6th, 2020 (Draft Day in MLB), after 55 out of 162 games, I have a player batting .416. I am reasonably confident that this quest will end in slumping and tears, but I'm assuming that others here may have had some success, or even particularly spectacular letdowns in the quest for such an average.

So, for those of you who have been playing mature leagues (I use that caveat since I believe people get outlandish statistical results early in the lifespan of many leagues, both historical and fictional), how often do you see the .400 threshold broken? Have any of your players done it? Looking at MLB-sized fictional leagues here, or MLB Quickstarts for the dataset, since I suspect smaller leagues or more mismatched talent levels might make it too easy for it to be a fair comparison.

Bret Hawkins is the only player in my online league history that has done it. He almost did it a second time last season. He batted .413 in 1988 (two years ago). He's probably the best player I've ever seen in any league.

I have never seen .400 excepot for my EBL vs MLB league and 2 historical leagues. Highest any non custom player hit was .372 and that was part of my EBL vs MLB but he played for a CBF team.

I had a player on my team bat .412 for the season. He then proceeded to bat .125 for the playoffs and also failed to win the Offensive MVP award losing to a guy who batted in the .360's.

I have a guy in my MLB league that just batted .419 a couple seasons ago. Guess what, his lowest batting average in his career was his 33 game stint in the beginning of his career (117 AB) when he batted .333. That's the lowest. Career .367 hitter. I guess that's what extremely high contact and avoid Ks will do. It doesn't hurt that his power is also elite, defense above average, and a decent eye. I believe he can make it to 3000 hits if he stops getting injured. Also he has 90 WAR by age 32. I honestly can't believe that OOTP created this guy, he's so good!

25 season into an ongoing game started in v4 and imported into each new version and now being played in v14. I have had one .400 hitter in that time.

Ken Householder hit .409 in 2021, year 19 of my dynasty.

Desmond Naquin hin .3990 in 2016.

The next highest average is .3758 with only 12 players hitting over .370 in my leagues history, including Householder's .409 and Naquin's .3990.

I noticed that he only played in 139 games. How long was the season, and how large is this league?

It's a twelve team league. 144 Game Season. Even still, he batted 521 times. I'm pretty sure that's enough to qualify in a 162 game MLB year.

You would need 502.2 plate appearances to qualify for a batting title in a 162-game season, so 521 would be enough.

the best I have seen in my league is .381 player flirted with .400 at all-star break but never could get back into the .390s

I had a guy hit .406 but ended up 1 PA short, due to injury limiting playing time

I never get anyone around .400 while I play. It usually happens in the early years when I am establishing history. I think the closest I've had was .370ish

I play fictional only and have played over 1000-2000 seasons since 2001. I have never had a .400 player but I have seen 3 on AI controlled teams. I use default settings and most of the time my leading BA player hits about .350.

A player in my league hit .412 with 61 doubles and 17 homers in his age 28 season winning MVP. It was his third of four years as a regular starter, always hitting over .300 with 15+ homers. He bounced around as a bench player for a few more years but was effectively done at 30. One of the strangest careers I've seen.

I had a player in a long-running solo league who was hitting .400 with two days left in the season. I took him out of the starting lineup, but the AI manager used him as a pinch hitter in both games. He went 2-2 and finished at .402 for the year.

In hindsight I probably should have just played the games out, but I always marveled at the fact that he did what he did.

Same with my current fictional league. Had one guy hit .394, but that's the highest I've seen.

I did have a guy hit .402 once in the last season (1989) of my old, now-fried league, the only one to do it in that league's 29-year history, but he was using PEEs (performance-enhancing edits), so that probably doesn't count.

By July 10, my guy is now down to .350.

I expected him to come up short, but not quite this short, this quickly.
