Loss of 1st round pick?

Hi
I picked up a good pitcher when the free agents list was published and now I have lost my 1st round pick.
His salary was around $17 million a year.
How is this avoided, is it based on salary?

It means his former team offered him arbitration and he declined, which makes him tied to compensatory pick.

Free agents that will cause you to lose your first round pick will be marked with "Comp" in the last column of the free agent screen in the offseason.
