Memoirs of Orcin-The Orcin interview
Orcin Dynasty Legend
Hall Of Famer status and lives up to it Join Date: Aug 2010 Posts: 2,801 Thanked 1,786x Please feel free to as additional or follow-up questions as long as they are respectful and not invade his privacy When and what version did you start playing OOTP? I started with OOTP 11. Prior to that, I played PureSim Baseball starting with the free version. What feature of the game do you love most? I like the depth of financial and roster management in the game. My favorite activity in the game is the GM aspect. I like the challenge of running the franchise for profit AND wins. What's your favorite baseball team (any league)? St. Louis Cardinals! I have been a fan since I was a child. I grew up listening to Jack Buck and Harry Caray on KMOX using a transistor radio hidden under my pillow. (I think my mom knew it was there.) How old are you? 61 Where are you originally from? I grew up in a small town in southern Illinois. I now live in Houston, Texas (since 1977). Are you a family man? Yes, I am married to my high school sweetheart (39 years) and we have two children, a daughter (32) and a son (25). What do you for a living? I am an accountant for a manufacturing company. Besides OOTP do you have any other hobbies or interest? I enjoy listening to music (classic rock, alternative, and jazz). I am into headphones, and I am a member at Head-Fi.org. My rig uses vacuum tubes and it is tuned to replicate vinyl. Why did you get involved writing in the Dynasty Reports? I started writing dynasty reports back in the PureSim forum, and I did it to chronicle my progress for my own amusement. There weren’t many of us writing there, so it didn’t have a big audience but it was an enthusiastic one. I soon realized that the interaction with the other players was as much fun as playing the game. I started with historical leagues but my interest went up exponentially when I began my first fictional dynasty. My story was no longer constrained by reality, and I have a lot more fun playing and writing fictional. You spend a lot of time in the Dynasty Forum for those who don't venture there why would you recommend it? There are a number of good reasons to spend time in the dynasty forum. Every new player should read dynasty reports as a tutorial to learn how the game works and what to do. More experienced players can still learn from some of the experts that post there, and I do mean professionals (you know who you are). If you love baseball, you can immerse yourself in the historical simulations run by our members or follow a fictional dynasty as the author builds a team with players whose future is unknown. There are also some very entertaining and creative stories in the forum – who doesn’t want to follow a team of zombies that eat the poor performers. Finally, you can get a lot of good ideas for your own games just by seeing what others have created. If the OOTP team asked you to be a consultant what will you change, add or remove for new version of the game? I would improve the schedule generator. Thankfully, we have the custom schedules created by gmo to compensate for the weak in-game scheduling tool. What other forum member’s work do you personally enjoy in the dynasty forum? Sal the Barber engages me, challenges me, and entertains me all at the same time. Sal has been a great friend since the PureSim days and I value his camaraderie and collaboration more than I can express to him. Gehrig38 should be charging me tuition for demonstrating how to turn a doormat franchise into a juggernaut in two or three seasons. Westheim describes all of the strategy, tactics, and emotions that go into the game while making me laugh at least once in every update. These are the three that I follow post-by-post. I read a lot of others in batch mode as I get the time. There’s no such thing as a bad dynasty report, but in general I value fictional over historical and story-driven over stats. Is there any other game or show your currently enjoying you would like to let us know about? For the past 7 years, I have been playing World of Warcraft and Everquest II on a casual basis (no raiding). I am also currently playing Civilization V: Gods & Kings and I plan to return to Diablo III when the expansion is released next year. My favorite show is The Walking Dead. I also watch Mad Men, Hell on Wheels, Downton Abbey, and Falling Skies. Yep, I like serial dramas. One last thing… If I might add a couple of nominations, I think you should interview Eugene Church who is the true legend of the dynasty forum. Big Six would certainly be a first ballot member of the dynasty forum’s Hall of Fame, and would also be a great interview subject. __________________ Last edited by Padreman; 11-14-2013 at 02:12 PM. |

Orcin got it right. It's actually Downton. 'N' on the first part, no 'w' on the second.
