Changing Player Positions

Hi all, the first problem: This game is consuming me. I don't expect sympathy.

Question: How does OOTP treat changing a players positions? If you stick with the established order of difficulty (1B,LF,RF,3B,CF,2B,SS,C) and keep in mind arm strength, can you take a catcher and put him in the OF (for instance) without a significant penalty?

No, but...
You can change a players position and see his ratings at that position. Not just his position rating but error, arm, turn DP, outfield range etc.
Based on those ratings a player may develop a rating (competence) at a position. There are minimums, I do not know them.
Then there is experience. A player must have experience at a new position. The best time to do this is ST, I have read that there is an experience bonus if done at this time. I cannot confirm that it is true.

If you look at the player in the editor you can see how much experience they have towards different positions.

Good luck,
Tom

Catcher is often excluded from the defensive spectrum because it is both difficult and specialized. Few if any catchers would succeed at SS or vice versa. OF is easier but range and arm would be compromised. A good catcher arm does not automatically mean anything in the OF.

Some catchers may be able to play OF but most will cost you a significant penalty. Keep in mind the impetus to play a catcher elsewhere usually revolves around his hitting value vs defensive value and the depth chart. Evan Gattis is a good example. Decent catcher but not enough to displace McCann. Lousy OF but Atlanta valued his bat enough to live with it. Probably driven by the disaster of BJ Upton.

Some of us question whether OOTP applies enough of a penalty when a player goes to a position for which they don't have sufficient skills.

Before anyone starts I'm aware of the exceptions to the general rule.
