Young Pitcher Velocity

So with a lot of players in the international free agent pool, I'll get about 3-4 starting pitching prospects with 70-80 potential overall, but I look at their stats and some of these guys only throw 86 mph, tops. Does that velocity increase as they get older? Because I don't often see IFA starters have listed velocities any higher than that.

Yes, their velocities will more than likely increase over time (assuming they progress positively).

I see occasional guys who scrape 90 or even higher, but in real life it's extremely rare for a 16 year old to throw 91+, which is why you don't see 16 year old guys who do that in OOTP very often either. And yes, velo changes a ton for young pitchers, and most of those guys will throw a bit or a lot harder when they get older.

IIRC average 16 year old velo IRL is low 80s? 82-84?

Thanks, that makes a ton of sense. I wasn't sure how velocities progressed in the same way as stuff/movement/control did.

Not even. Most high school kids that age throw in the 70s. They may get into the low 80s by the time they're 17-18 and have grown a little more. If they go on to pitch in college, most will top out in the mid-upper 80s.

We think guys who throw 90+ are common because that's all we see at the pro level, but for every one guy who can throw more than 90 there's a few hundred who can barely hit 87.
