The achievements are just achievements. You get a trophy in your personal trophy case and that's it.

If you 'pitch to contact', that means you aren't trying for a strikeout. You're happy to let the batter put the ball in play, and take your chances with your defense. Strikeouts are good, so you wouldn't choose to use the strategy often, but it's a strategy you might use in certain circumstances. It should increase the probability of a double-play groundball, for example. It should also help to keep your pitchers' pitch counts down, which might be good either in a blowout game (if you want to conserve your bullpen for tomorrow) or in a situation where your bullpen is already exhausted, and you don't want to use too many pitchers.

It's not exactly how I think it ought to work, but Markus indicated somewhere that high-Control pitchers are the ones most likely to succeed pitching to contact, since they're the ones most likely to be able to keep the ball away from the heart of the plate, thus inducing weaker contact.

Achievements don't unlock anything. They are just there. Sort of like "checkpoints". FWIW, I turn off achievement notifications, so I don't know when I get them nor do I care.

Pitch-to-contact puts emphasis on getting the ball over the plate. Results in a higher likelihood of a hit and should only be used if you've got a pitcher who's having trouble throwing strikes.

EDIT: injury log beat me to it.

dont know on the first but when you pitch to contact you want the player to put it into play. as a pitcher situations you might pitch to contact is to induce a double play or if you have a big lead and don't want to walk guys and you will trust your defense. just a few examples. pitching to contact is basically not trying to over pitch and possibly walk people. you want the ball put in play. its a realistic approach to pitching in certain situations.

edit: nevermind several people beat me to it.
