High Caught Stealings??
I love to play this game more for the trading/developing aspect, so I sim a lot of games/seasons.
I have noticed that a lot of base stealers seem to get high CS. For instance, Davey Lopes (just ONE example of many), who had a career 83% success rate, has a CAREER rate of 62%. Bobby Tolan is at 64% and in an 80s league I ran, Leflore, Raines, et al, struggled to get over 70% It has gotten so bad, that I pretty much have lowered the Mgr's strategy in that area. Has anyone else had this problem, or is it my IPad/Game?

Same with me. I sim the games (one-pitch) and can't seem to figure out how my opponent does it with poor base stealers, yet I can't with good base stealers.
What on earth does Throw to First do? When I Pitch Out, why does he steal the base when the count is 2-0. I can't pitch out like that, as I can only Pitch Out when the count is 0-0 What does Send Forced do as opposed to Steal Second? |

I wish I knew. One game I played through I had a guy steal on my catcher (who is very good defensively...I always make sure my catcher has good defensive ratings) with 18 speed and 22 stealing bases ratings (1-100 scale, so he was very slow) and then I try stealing with a guy with 80-or-so speed and 90-or-so stealing bases and he gets caught.
Does anyone know how speed/stealing ratings and catcher ratings affect anything, if they even have any effect? By the way Dr Brian...I know how you feel. Countless times I've tried to pick off a speedy baserunner and then pitched out, then he stole 2nd the next pitch. |

I haven't played PBP in a while, but I think Send Forced means the forced runner will go no matter what, whereas steal second the runner may change his mind. Also, a runner not in a force situation won't run, i.e. runner on 1st & 3rd.
I used to use run and hit for most of my steals anyway. In iootp12 I found the double steal unrealistic. I use to pull it off 90% of the time and sometimes a few times a game. Check out the online manual for ootp14 for a lot of the concepts of the game. They might not translate exactly over to iootp, but it might give you some good clues. And ditto on the Double Steal. Seems like it is 90% success rating. Way more than just a steal of second. Clearly a flaw in the program. I thought I was the only one that noticed that. |

stolen bases
My experience, not that I have tested my hypothesis, is that stealing bases is the only aspect of the game that favors the AI.
I rarely call for the steal (or run and hit) unless the pitcher and catcher are seriously deficient and my runner is very good, but even then I suffer a lot of caught-stealings. The AI, on the other hand, seems to have great success stealing bases against a primo catcher arm and a pitcher with an excellent hold rating. If there is a cheat here favoring the AI, that is fine with me. |

For me some games guys never get thrown out even if they aren't the best runners and some games my best runners get caught stealing all the time. So it's about 50/50 for me.

The more I play, the more I wonder about how the steal works. Ricky Henderson should not have nearly the same amount of caught stealing as he does steals.
There is something skewed with the game... and I'd still like to know how everything interacts with Steal 2nd, Send Forced, Run and Hit, etc., all work. I'm not into trial and error, as I've played 900 games and still can't get a grasp of it. The manuals are silent, and understanding some players like it that way. However, there is no reason why this can't be in a manual, and those players just mentioned don't read the manul. Best of both worlds. If a manual is silent, it leads me to beleive in poor programming, like the preponderance of double steals for my teams and it's absurd success rate. |
